Life is a key theme in John’s gospel; it is used thirty-six times. The word Life brings up many questions, but I would like to focus on one question and that is this:
What are the essentials for human life?
There are at least four basic essentials for human life.
Light – Without the Sun we would all die
Air – Without air we would die
Water – Without water we would die
Food – Without food we would die
These four essentials will be the theme of our message, light, air, water, and food.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
These four essentials of life is the theme of our message.
Light, air, water, and food are four of the basic essentials for life and each person in the sound of my voice and on all over the earth cannot survive without them.
Let’s look at each one of these essentials and see what we might learn this morning.
Light is so important for human life, it is what allows our bones to gain strength. Our physical condition would change without life and we would die.
The Bible tells us this about light in John 8:12; Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.
Without Jesus one cannot exist with fulfillment in their lives they need to receive that spiritual light that is so essential for the Christian walk and everlasting life.
We need air to breath or we die. Tell story of San Francisco visit and the smog but those there called it gray fog. Day so bad that had advisories not to go outside.
Jesus Christ gives to the Christian the breath of life. Without the breath of life that comes from Jesus there would be spiritual death.
Some may even be polluted with false teaching that hinders spiritual life.
And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. John 20:22
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." John 3:8
We need water to exist, we cannot live without it. Tell story about the aqua system in Kansas and how the old abandon mine in southeastern Kansas are filled with water that is laced with zinc and lead and if the aqua system drops much more these contaminated mine water will enter the aqua system and contaminate the drinking water.
Jesus Christ gives to the Christian the water of life.
In the world that we live in there is a movement to contaminate the water of life, by false teachings that tells you it’s alright just as you believe in a god.
Without the water of life there will always be a thirst within the soul of a person.
Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water. John 4:10
Jesus answered and said to her, Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4:13-14
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. 39But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39
We cannot exist without the nourishment of food.
Jesus Christ gives to the Christian the bread of life. We cannot exist without the spiritual nourishment of the bread of life.
And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35
