Summary: This Mothers Day message uses the story of a mother to illustate how God uses mothers to make a big difference for their families.

2 TIMOTHY 1:1-11

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

John Quincy Adams said,

"All that I am my mother made me."

Abraham Lincoln said,

"All that I am or hope to be, I own to my angel mother."

Dwight Moody said,

"All that I have ever accomplished in life, I owe to my mother."

The influence of a Godly mother over her children

cannot be overstated.

And it ought not be undervalued!

In our Biblical text today…

the Apostle Paul mentions the influence of 2 mothers.

And it is that kind of mother that Jesus can bless.

To illustrate the great influence of a Godly mother,

let me tell you the story of Susannah Prentice.

This story goes back to 1950.

Susannah and her husband, Miles, lived in a 2 story house…

which was located on the coast of Maine.

Miles and Sussanah had 2 sons and a daughter.

Their names were Annie, James and John.

The Prentice family were devout Baptists…

except for John the youngest son.

Though he attended worship services with his family…

John had never accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior.

Miles Prentice was a lobster fisherman.

He was barely able to catch enough lobster…

to support his family.

One day, when the weather report said storms were possible…

Miles decided he had no choice.

He had to go check his lobster traps…

hoping to catch enough lobsters to pay the electric bill…

which was due the next day.

So…Miles and his oldest son, James, headed out to sea…

on their small lobster fishing boat.

Sure enough! A big storm blew up.

Miles and his son fought hard to keep their boat afloat.

The storm raged on…and Miles and James were carried out to sea.

And when the storm finally passed on…

Miles & James were in trouble.

It was dark now.

The clouds in the sky meant there were no stars for navigation.

Meanwhile, back at the Prentice home…

Susannah knew that her husband and son

would not be able to find their way back home.

So she took a lamp and put it in the attic window,

hoping its rays would serve as a beacon

to direct her husband and son home safely.

As we consider mother

and her influence over her family,

let’s consider what kind of mother Jesus can bless.

There was a lot of light shining in Timothy’s home.

Grandmother Lois had given light to her daughter Eunice

And then Eunice passed that light on to her son, Timothy.

Friends, I think we can all agree.

These are dark times….spiritually speaking.

· Drug abuse activity increases.

· Consumption of alcohol is on the rise.

· Psychic Hotlines lead many astray.

· Evolution is taught as fact.

· Sexual immorality is encouraged on every hand.

· Divorce is tearing apart families.

· The abandonment of Christian values is prevalent

· But mothers, there is light!

· Let yours shine!

The light of good deeds and unselfish service.

The light of God’s word lived out in your home.

The light of truth, honesty, and integrity
