God Knows How To Get Your Attention

2 Samuel 14:28-33

28 And Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, but did not see the king's face.

29Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king, but he would not come to him. And when he sent again the second time, he would not come.

30So he said to his servants, "See, Joab's field is near mine, and he has barley there; go and set it on fire." And Absalom's servants set the field on fire.

31Then Joab arose and came to Absalom's house, and said to him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?"

32And Absalom answered Joab, "Look, I sent to you, saying, 'Come here, so that I may send you to the king, to say, "Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still." ' Now therefore, let me see the king's face; but if there is iniquity in me, let him execute me."

33So Joab went to the king and told him. And when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king. Then the king kissed Absalom.

Have you ever wondered why bad things happen to some people?

There are many reasons why bad things happen.

Today, I'm going to preach on one of those reasons.

Our Bible story, in 2 Samuel 14, gives us a clear illustration

of God doing whatever it takes to get a person's attention.

Absalom, King David's son, had rebelled against his father

and had been expelled from the king's presence.

Absalom wanted to speak with his father, David,

but David refused.

Joab, David's captain, refused to see Absalom

on two separate occasions.

This made Absalom very angry.

So Absalom thought, "what can I do to get the king's attention?"

He decided to set Joab's barley field on fire.

Just as he planned, he got the king's attention.

And David granted Absalom permission to come see him.

Now what Absalom did doesn't seem right.

But Absalom believed he had no other choice.

Because he was ignored or simply disregarded,

he had to do something drastic to get the king's attention.

Burning a barley field was a pretty drastic action.

I often wonder what God will have to do

to get some people's attention.

This may sound like the wrong thing to do...

But I am now praying for God to do what it takes

to get a person's attention.

As a pastor, I have a responsibility

in trying to get people's attention.

I am not always heard.

Sometimes, I am ignored.

Sometimes, I am simply disregarded.

Often that the Word of God is disobeyed...

in spite of Its continued warnings.

I find today that even church people live...

as if there were no God.

Sure, they say they believe in Him...

and have believed in Him for years.

Sure, there was a time in their lives

when they actually placed their trust in Jesus for salvation.

If you were to ask them where they would spend eternity,

their answer would be "Heaven!"

However, their living and their obedience

denies the faith they claim.

Are they saved?

I'm relatively sure they are.

Are they living in rebellion?

I am absolutely sure they are.

They become backslidden!

They neglect prayer and Bible reading.

Regular church attendance stops.

When this happens,

God has to do something drastic in order to get our attention.

Is there something God wants from you?

Point #1. God wants you to be saved.

There are many people in churches who are not saved,

yet folks think they are.

The truth is, they know they are lost.

Service after service, they are convicted of their sin.

They know they need Jesus to save them.

Yet because of pride, they refuse to get saved.

God has done everything that needs to be done

in order for you to receive Christ.

* Man is a sinner and cannot save himself.

* God sent Jesus to pay for your sins.

* Jesus died on Calvary and gave His life a ransom for many.

He then calls to every one to come to Christ and be saved,

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Romans 10:13)

What will God have to do to get your attention

in order for you to get saved?

What barley field will He have to burn

to cause you to come running?

Point #2. God wants you to surrender your life to Him.

God does not send His angels to do the work of God on this earth.

His angels are ministering spirits,

but He calls people into His service.

He calls men and women to serve Him here.
