God of this City

Grant van Boeschoten

March 1, 2009

I’m glad that you are here today, because today is the day that we start a new series called God of this City. This is more than just good teaching though, throughout this month we are not just going to hear some great truth, we are going to declare and establish Jesus Christ as the God of this City.

MAIN THOUGHT: Those who understand God’s love for the people of this city are moved to action.

Every Sunday when I stand up to preach I am preaching to more than just the people who are in the congregation, I am talking to our city. I am proclaiming God’s hope and God’s purpose and God’s promise over Eckville. Every week I tell the devil that he is losing his grip on our city and that the name of Jesus will continue to be proclaimed over and over and over again until we have complete victory.

Part of the purpose of Eckville you see, is to be a model of transformation to our continent. Part of the reason why God has placed you in this church and in this community, is because he is using this Church to completely and radically change a town for his glory and for his purpose. He wants to show the world his power, and he is going to use this Church as his tool.

Say it with me this morning, “Jesus Christ is the God of this City. Jesus Christ is the God of this City. Jesus Christ is the God of this City!” AMEN.

I’m so excited for what God is doing, and is going to do in this city because of the Word Of Life Centre Church and Ministries. Let’s look to the Bible and learn about God’s love and plan for our lives and our Church.

If you have your Bible here this morning then I’m proud of you. Turn in your Bibles to 1 John chapter 4. It’s the Chapter where we read about one of the Characteristics of God.

God Loves All People

1 John 4:7-10

7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

When Jesus came to earth, he was an expression of God’s love. Jesus was God in human skin, he was God that you could see with your eyes, and touch with your hands. To see Jesus, was to see God.

Jesus life was all about love, but maybe not the kind of love that you or I think of specifically.

We think of love in a romantic sort of a way. Valentine’s Day is the Holiday where we express our love.

We think of love in our actions. We hug those that we love, those that we really love we kiss.

We think of love in our priorities. If someone loves you they find a way to make time for you. Many families are brought closer together when quality time is a priority of all the family members.

These are all valid expressions of love. But Jesus took takes love to the next level.

The real holiday that is all about love is Easter, because Easter marks the resurrection of Jesus after he showed the ultimate expression of love, dying on the cross for the sins of the people that he loved so much.
