The DICHOTOMY(:9-12)

Explanation: (:9-12) Disparity/Separation/Contrast/Corruption vs. Perfection

:9—“This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.”

Dichotomy—a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different.

:9-10 contrasts :11-12 & vice-versa.

The following 4 verses concisely reiterate 6:1-8 while granting slightly more in regard to Noah’s character as it relates to God.

Noah was a man after God’s own heart. His behavioral characteristics were a testimony to a trust in his God.

*Noah exemplified God in that he was recognized & characterized as “a just man.” He lived this trait before his God & his fellow man.

*Noah was also considered by God to be “perfect” within all those “in his generations.” That is, Noah did what he did because he was compelled by his God to do so.

*Noah was also recognized as one who “walked” in the same direction as God—his choices mimicked those of God. Noah paralleled God as much as any of fallen humanity could... or rather he “walked” as God had intended mankind to “walk.” He was ‘yoked’ with God as closely as anyone could be.

“Genealogy”—hdlwt to-led-aw'—1) Descendants, results, proceedings, generations, genealogies—1a) Account of men & their descendants—1a1) Genealogical list of one's descendants, 1a2) One's contemporaries, 1a3) Course of history (of creation etc), 1b) Begetting or account of heaven (metaph). Strong—(plural only) Descent, i.e. Family; (figuratively) history.

“Just”—qydu tsad-deek'—1) Just, lawful, righteous—1a) Just, righteous (in government), 1b) Just, right (in one's cause), 1c) Just, righteous (in conduct & character), 1d) Righteous (as justified & vindicated by God), 1e) Right, correct, lawful.

“Perfect”—Mymt taw-meem'—Adj.—1) Complete, whole, entire, sound—1a) Complete, whole, entire, 1b) Whole, sound, healthful, 1c) Complete, entire (of time), 1d) Sound, wholesome, unimpaired, innocent, having integrity, 1e) What is complete or entirely in accord with truth & fact (neuter adj/subst). Strong—Entire (literally, figuratively or morally); Also (as noun) integrity, truth.

“Generations”—rwd dowr—1) Period, generation, habitation, dwelling—1a) Period, age, generation (period of time), 1b) Generation (those living during a period), 1c) Generation (characterised by quality, condition, class of men), 1d) Dwelling-place, habitation. Strong—properly, A revolution of time, i.e. An age or generation; also a dwelling.

“Walked”—Klh halak haw-lak'—1) To go, walk, come. Strong—a primitive root; To walk (in a great variety of applications, literally & figuratively).

:10—“And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, & Japheth.”

Noah has 3 sons. Their names are reiterated here as from 5:32.

*Here is a man who “walks with God” & is raising three sons to do the same. He could not “walk with God” & neglect his family’s relationship with the Almighty loving salvific God.

“Shem”—Mv Shem—Shem = "name." name; Shem, a son of Noah (often includ. his posterity).

“Ham”—Mx khawm—Ham = "hot." Strong—Hot (from the tropical habitat); Cham, a son of Noah; also (as a patronymic) his descendants or their country.

“Japheth”—tpy yeh'-feth—Japheth = "opened." Strong—from htp paw-thaw'; expansion; Jepheth, a son of Noah; also his posterity.

:11—“The earth also was corrupt before God, & the earth was filled with violence.”

“The earth” “was corrupt” according to God but not according to the majority of men. As a result of their corruption, the world had become “filled with violence.” God had allowed the violence to escalate to the point that nothing could be done to alleviate it aside from His Divine intervention.

Every corner of the earth was infected with & effected by man’s corruption. It can be said per Rom. 8:19-22, that the entirety of creation did not escape man’s corruption until man himself does! Thereby “the earth”—every part of creation—experiences the violence resulting from man’s corruption.

“Earth”(See :12, :13 2X17 2X—compare hmda :20)—Ura 'eh'-rets—1) land, earth—1a) Earth—1a1) whole earth (as opposed to a part), 1a2) earth (as opposed to heaven), 1a3) earth (inhabitants), 1b) Land—1b1) country, territory, 1b2) district, region, 1b3) tribal territory, 1b4) piece of ground, 1b5) land of Canaan, Israel, 1b6) inhabitants of land, 1b7) Sheol, land without return, (under) world, 1b8) city (-state), 1c)Ground, surface of the earth—1c1) ground, 1c2) soil, 1d)(in phrases)—1d1) people of the land, 1d2) Space or distance of country (in measurements of distance), 1d3) Level or plain country, 1d4) land of the living, 1d5) end(s) of the earth, 1e) (Almost wholly late in usage)—1e1) lands, countries—1e1a) Often in contrast to Canaan. Strong—from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; The earth (at large, or partitively a land).
