John 1:1-18 God's Son Revealed
I. HIS PRE-EMINENCE 1 In the beginning was the Word,
A. In Creation
1. His Past—"In the beginning was the Word."
2. His Power—"And the Word was with God."
3. His Person—"And the Word was God."
4. His Permanence— 2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made
Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
B. In Conversion
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Isa 9:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. (740 B.C.)
1. The Light Revealed
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
2. The Light Resisted 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
3. The Light Received 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
note the three verbs: believe, receive, become
C. In Control
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
1. Jesus Is Eternally God "the Word" belongs to a realm where time does not matter
The word did not have a beginning The word will never have an ending.
The word belongs to eternity.
2. Jesus Is Equally God and the Word was with God
3. Jesus Is Essentially God and the Word was God
II. HIS PROCLAMATION 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
A. The Method - There was a man sent from God
B. The Message - 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
An Unequivocal Message - to bear witness of the Light
A Universal Message - that all men
An Indispensable Message - through him might believe.
C. The Messenger 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
D. The Manifestation
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
III. HIS PENETRATION
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
A. His Residency 10 He was in the world
B. His Royalty - and the world was made by him
C. His Rejection - and the world knew him not.
A Universal Rejection - and the world knew him not.
A Social Rejection - 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
A Local Rejection - He was even rejected by His own family.
John 7:5 For neither did his brethren believe in him.
D. His Reception 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
IV. HIS PURPOSE
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
A. Incarnation 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, "He tabernacled among us"
That tabernacle was "all glorious within," but its glory was a hidden glory.
When he came to "pitch his tent" among us he veiled his glory.
Gazing on the incarnate Son of God, they saw one "full of grace and truth"
Grace corresponds with the revelation of God as Love;
Truth corresponds with the revelation of God as Light.
B. Identification 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,
C. Imputation 16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
The word (fulness) speaks of the sum total of the attributes and powers of God. Out of that inexhaustible supply every believer is given all he or she needs. "And grace for grace," - new grace, continuous grace, uninterrupted grace.
