Good Friday Sermon

John 15:13 - There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends.

Bluefish.tv video - Sister’s sacrifice

Wow… she was planning to give her life up… for her brother… the first time I saw that video… I cried. I was sitting next to Holli and a friend of ours from out of town… so I did it quietly… but I couldn’t help it. It gripped me in my soul. I think we’re drawn to that kind of love… it’s what we cry out for… it causes us to cry… because something in that is what we’re made to experience… to want to experience… but here on earth, that kind of love is so rare.

I think our desire for that kind of love is what connects us to God. It’s what causes us to spend most of our lives looking for God. But we don’t look in church for the most part… to fill that love void. We look many different places… relationship… women… friends… parties and such… education… career… family… houses… cars… thinking that we can feel whole when we arrive at that place that we aim for… the problem is… we have a God shaped hole in our being… it’s almost as though we’re missing something core to us… and we so desperately want to feel a love that is so pure… and so deep… and without any other agendas… that would just say… I love you… nothing else… I think that’s deep in us… I think we feel incomplete without it… it’s a deep longing.

And I think this same kind of love is what connects God to us. The Bible says that he is love… but not some ordinary love… not a I want to be with you because I’ve gotten to know you love… not a because you were born to me I love you love… it’s deeper… God’s love is so deep that the creating act ties him to us. I made you in my image… and we’re led to believe that something deep within him desires to express itself to us… not because of what we do… not because of the praises we bring him… not because of any ritual that we can carry out… but simply because we contain within us something similar to him. It’s what causes him to never give up on us… it’s what causes him to constantly reach out to us… it’s what causes him to suffer for us… it’s what causes him to send his only son to earth… to this mess we call life… to walk with us… to experience rejection… pain… puberty… homework… death of loved ones… to experience the great disappointments of life… to watch as we betray him… to be beaten with a whip tied with nails… glass… and bone… to carry his own instrument of death up a hill…

A few minutes before the Last Supper… Jesus surprised his disciples by washing their feet… like a servant. The disciples protested… but God wanted to show us what this great love looks like. There are no boundaries… no limits… no proper way to do it… he wanted us to know… there’s no lengths that I would not travel… to love. My love for you is so great… there is no expression of love that I would hold back.

This is all great love… the love of God for his people shown through the life of Jesus… but the love we celebrate tonight is love greater than even this. God subjected himself to something that he should never have experienced… after all… he is God… he has always lived… will always live… but God, gave his life… willingly… Think about that. The little girl who was willing to do that for her brother… she was going to die someday anyway. God wasn’t. The love that draws God to man is so great… that its ultimate expression on Good Friday some 2,000 years ago… was an ultimate expression. There is no way to express more love than this. If you ever wonder if God cares about you… loves you… wants to be with you… I tell you this… he does. There is no greater love that the love of God for man… and Good Friday is proof of this.

That’s what we remember tonight. That we are drawn to this love that is deeper than any other expression of love… we’re so drawn to it that we spend our whole lives searching for it… and many… maybe most… never find it…

And that expression of love was made on a day like today… when God himself… gave something so incredible… for no other reason… than desperate… love.

Before his crucifixion… Jesus ate with his disciples… in a way that showed them what it was going to mean for Christ to die for them.
