Summary: Not everyone responds to Jesus the first time He calls.

A. INTRODUCTION

Not everyone responds to Jesus the first time. He calls and not everyone responds completely to Jesus’ call.

B. FIRST CALL TO PETER – SALVATION (JOHN 1:42)

1. “And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him He said, ‘You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas’” (John 1:42).

2. Andrew brought Peter to Jesus the day after Jesus was baptized. His name changed from Simon the listener to Peter the Rock.

3. This happened at the Jordan River near the Dead Sea.

C. SECOND CALL TO PETER – SERVICE (MARK 1:16-17)

“And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men’” (Mark 1:16-17).

As Jesus walked by, He challenged them to leave their nets.

1. “I will make you” – character.

2. “Fishers of men” – ministry.

D. A DEMONIZED MAN IN THE SYNAGOGUE (MARK 1:21-27)

1. The favorite name of the devil/demons for deity, “The Holy One of God” (Mark 1:24) – El Elyon

2. Jesus cannot receive recognition/worship from demons.

E. JESUS HEALS PETER’S MOTHER-IN-LAW

1. “Jesus stood over her” (Luke 4:39) – His presence.

2. “Touched her hand” (Matt. 8:15) – His healing.

3. “He took her by the hand and lifted her up” (Mark 1:37) – His restoration.

F. JESUS’ TOUR OF GALILEE

“At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him” (Mark 1:32-34).

1. How many did Jesus heal? All.

2. When did Jesus heal? Evenings, after a busy day of ministry.

3. What kinds of diseases? All kinds.

G. HEALING IN PETER’S HOUSE (MARK 2:1-12)

1. Jesus returns to Peter’s house to preach (v. 1). Note the various locations He uses to preach.

2. Corporate faith. “Jesus saw their faith” (v. 5).

3. The first invisible miracle. “Son, your sins are forgiven you” (v. 5).

4. The omniscience of Jesus. “When Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned within themselves” (v. 8).

5. The antithesis. “Which is easier to say . . . ‘your sins are forgiven’ or ‘arise, take up your bed and walk’”? (v. 9).

6. The second visible miracle demonstrates the invisible miracle.

H. THE THIRD CALL TO PETER – COMMITMENT (LUKE 5:1-11)

1. The public sermon. “Put out a little from the land” (v. 3).

2. The private miracle. “Launch out into the deep” (v. 4).

3. The incomplete obedience. “Let down your nets for a catch” (v. 4). “I will let down the net” (v. 5).

4. The incomplete blessing. “Their net was broken” (v. 6). “Filled both the boats, that they began to sink” (v. 7). If Peter had let down all the nets, he might have caught more and his net (singular) might not have broken.

5. Before the miracle, Peter called Him “Master;” control over one area of his life; after the miracle Peter called Him “Lord,” ruler over all areas of his life.

I. APPLICATION

1. The persistent principle. Success in ministry comes to those who keep it.

2. The reserved response principle. Some people like Peter must think through the steps they take in responding to Jesus.

3. The inner journey principle. A person must journey within before he is successful without.

If you have never really accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, would you do it right now? Do not delay or put it off. If you would like to receive Christ by faith, pray this simple prayer in your heart:

Dear Lord, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died for my sins on the cross, and rose again the third day. I repent of my sins. By faith I receive the Lord Jesus as my Savior. You promised to save me, and I believe You, because You are God and cannot lie. I believe right now that the Lord Jesus is my personal Savior, and that all my sins are forgiven through His precious blood. I thank You, dear Lord, for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you prayed that prayer, God heard you and saved you. I personally want to welcome you to the family of God and rejoice with you.
