Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. - Colossians 3:12

We can always humble ourselves in any situation. As God's people we have the grace of God in our lives that gives us the perspective that we deserve nothing and therefore can always show love and mercy to others. We can always find a way to show compassion to people who are hurting. We can always find a way to be kind in a situation. No matter if we are being mis-used we can still remain humble and show patience. Even if we are being attacked we can be gentle and kind in response not paying evil for evil. It is only because we are dearly loved of God that we can do these things, no one in their own energy or self-effort can love the loveless or show kindness in the midst of hurt.

This world is full of hurting people, we have all been hurt in some way. When we do not deal with these hurts in our hearts we end up hurting others and doing the same things to others that was done to us. This is not the way of freedom but bondage. Many people feel to win an argument means success or to prove someone else wrong. But the way of the kingdom of God is opposite. If just like Jesus we are willing to die to ourselves and be in the tomb for 3 days life will always come from that situation. As we allow God to work in a situation then the Lord can bring forgiveness, healing and restoration. The next verse speaks of forgiveness: "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." No matter who we have been treated we can respond with Christ's love and then we are free. It was asked of a Christian in jail saying: "You are not free." But the Christian replied to the solider, "Yes, I am free, but you are the one not free and with chains."
