Summary: We should always seek out God when trouble arises.

Hens and Chicks

Luke 13: 31 - 35

Intro: An elderly woman went to the doctor’s office. When asked why she was there, she responded, “I’d like to have some birth control pills.” The doctor said, “But Mrs. Jones, you are 72 years old. What possible use could you have for birth control pills?” She answered, “They will help me sleep better.” Doctor: “How in the world with they help you sleep?” She said, “I will put them in my granddaughter’s orange juice every morning; and I will sleep better at night.”

I VS. 32 – “Go tell that fox, I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.

A Fear of her granddaughter getting pregnant drove Mrs. Jones to the doctor. A drastic act, for sure.

B Fear of what people may say about us may keep us from being bold in following Christ.

C We should never let fear restrain us from doing God’s will and reaching God’s goal for our lives.

II Have you ever reached a point in your life when you ask God, “What more do you want from me? I’ve given and given, served and done . . . What more does God want from me?”

A VS. 33 – “In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day - - -“

B It isn’t over until God says it’s over. We just persevere and never, never give up.

C We face all types of enemies in our lives: sickness, loss, trouble, challenges, tragedies, natural disasters. They come to us all. Jesus says, “press on!”

III There is one thing we forget. Look at the second half of VS. 34 – “how I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.”

A The Lord never leaves us to fend for ourselves. God is always near in the person of the Holy Spirit to protect and sustain us.

B When trouble threatens, the mother hen spreads her wings and her chicks run for the shelter they offer.

C We are never destitute or alone. Yet, in our sinful, ungrateful ways, we often forget God’s loving protection.
