The Ten Commandments

Honor Your Mother and Father – 5th Commandment

July 1, 2018

The bible is a family story. Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Jacob and his sons, David and his family, etc.

Exodus 20:12 NIV

"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

We assume this commandment is only for kids, but this commandment was for the entire community.

Leviticus 19:32 NIV

"'Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.”

Ephesians 6:1-3 NIV

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother"-which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."

The honor we give will be the honor we receive.

When we care for our parents, our kids learn to honor us.

We get the care we need because we gave care that was needed.

We take care of our kids for the first 20 years of their lives and they take care of us for the last years of our lives. ??

What if my parents aren’t honorable?

1. Forgiveness is free.

We’re trusting God with them.

Forgiveness is giving our anger, our hurt and our fear to God and not letting what happened to us define us a second longer.

• When you hear their name, you hope they are blessed, not cursed.

2. Trust is earned.

It’s destructive when we give in to controlling people.

• Forgiveness does not excuse their behavior!!

• The mental conversations with them are getting less and less

• Protect yourself with healthy boundaries.

• If we do not allow people to control us, abuse us or mistreat us, we are happier! It is a scientific fact.

3. Kindness is constant.

Hebrews 13:16 NIV

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Conclusion:

John 19:26-27 NIV

When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
