How Can The Lord Help You Handle Prolonged Disputes?

What are some of the Biblical guidelines for handling controversies?

1. Keep your attitude, thoughts and lifestyle calm and above reproach. Paul writes, "Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you." (Phil.1 :27,28a)

2. Avoid the temptation to habitually complain, bicker and argue. Paul writes, "Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe, as you hold out the word of life." (Phil. 2:14-16)

3. Show respect, appreciation and admiration for others, especially your leaders. Paul writes, "Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. (I Thes. 5 :12)

4. Learn to live in harmony with people by highlighting the positive aspects of what you have in common. Paul writes, "Live in peace with each other." (I Thes. 5 :13)

5. Show discernment in giving advice based upon people’s spiritual needs. Paul writes, "And we urge you brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone." (I Thes. 5 :14)

6. Try not to fall into the trap of extracting vengeance. Paul writes, "Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else." (I Thes. 5:15)

7. Be known as a person who is upbeat about life. "Be joyful always." (I Thes. 5 :16)

8. Pray before you speak. "Pray continually." (I Thes. 5 :17) Let the power of the Spirit speak through you as you yield your mind, your heart and your lips to His service.

9. Be thankful for what you have rather than complaining about what you do not have." Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." (I Thes. 5 :18)

lO. Ask the Lord to give you peace as you appropriate your sanctification in Christ. Paul writes, "May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." (I Thes. 5:23)

11. Remember that God is faithful to see to that His purpose triumphs over all. Paul writes, "The one who calls you is faithful and He will do it. (I Thes. 5:23,24)
