Summary: Lot is a good example of all that we must avoid if we are to be good fathers. Father’s day message.

Father’s Day

June 15, 2003

How to be a bad dad.

I have been told that it takes a wise man to learn from his mistakes. I agree. It is a good thing to learn from our mistakes. However, I think it takes even more wisdom to learn from the mistakes of others in order to avoid making the same mistakes.

That is my premise this father’s day - we are going to attempt to learn from the mistakes of a biblical father. Where better to look than where we have been anyway - Genesis.

Lot - first - he was a believer like we.

Lot the heights - 2 Peter 2:7-8

7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men

8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)--

Lot the depths - Genesis 19:30-38

1. Make the bottom line the bottom line. Genesis 13:5-13

It is a father’s responsibility to provide for his family. But do we make our job our family? Are we interested in providing what our family needs or every toy they desire? Are we spending 60 plus hours on the job and stealing that time from our families? Do we take the promotion even when it will put our family in a position of greater danger? This is a danger even for ministers.

The myth of quality time - our children need great quantities of our time.

2. Be willing to sacrifice your children for the sake of your name. Genesis 19:4-8

Pastor that is so disgusting - how can you even suggest that we might be guilty of the same type of thing?

There are many ways to sacrifice our kids

- for the sake of our job

- for the sake of our dreams - living the dream through the child

- for the sake of our desires - divorce - what does it do to the kids

- for the sake of our reputation - hide our hypocrisy

3. Refuse to learn from your mistakes Genesis 19:30

What is Lot doing in that cave?

Do you think Abraham would have taken him back?

Genesis 19:29

Fear - pride - get in the way from doing what is right for our family. Are we man enough to admit when we are wrong and to swallow our pride and do what is best for our family?
