Many of us are at times concerned to be in the will of God. What a wonderful truth we see here that if we humble ourselves God will guide us in right paths and show us his ways. Yet how do we know how to properly humble ourselves in situations in life. We can simply use this principle or spiritual rule that no matter what circumstance we can lower ourselves. Andrew Murray says, "Here is the path to the higher life: down, lower down!" So, if we think we are right, we can choose to find rather the wrong we did even if very small. We can realize though we know much in a situation we are still not able to perfectly know as God does. Humility says I am not God and really do not know much. Humility says I am but dust and need God's help in every circumstance. To be humble is to remain teachable in our spiritual journey with the Lord. The Lord cannot teach us his way if we are full of our ways and understandings.
Andrew Murray also says, "Humility is perfect quietness of heart. It is to expect nothing, to wonder at nothing that is done to me, to feel nothing done against me. It is to be at rest when nobody praises me, and when I am blamed or despised." How hard it is in our generation to have a quiet heart a still heart. Busyness and a million different things try to attract our heart and attention. All these ways are attractions to the flesh, things that boost pride at times, self-sufficency and independence. Humility allows us to be in the place where no matter what other men think of us we care more of what the Lord thinks. Humility says we are just servants of the Lord and are happy to serve food to the poor or teach in the large Church in the pulpit. Cleaning the toilets of the Church or writing a christian book, the heart must remain the same in its devotion to the Lord. If our heart is not busy but centred on the Lord and sensitive to his leading and teaching, we will not be moved by circumstances, people or situations. Lord, keep me humble, simple, and realize just like some of the holy Apostles to realize that they were just simple fishermen. The same with us Lord, we are just the simple that you are choosing to use for your glory. Keep us humble and useable for you. Amen.
