Psalm 24:1-2

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.

For he laid the earth’s foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths.

The fact that God is almighty is very reassuring to the Christian, because our faith is that an almighty God, will do what he determines is best, according to his strength and ability, that is line with his plan that was formed before the beginning of time.

But when you boil it down, the fact that God is almighty means that God has ultimate free will to do whatever, whenever, however. God is free.

It is very reassuring to me that my God who has such enormous strength and power describes himself in the Bible as being a good God. In fact, the Bible goes so far to say “God is love.” (1 John 4:8)

Could you imagine the sheer terror that would be ours if God was not good. What would the result be of having an almighty God who could not be trusted to keep his word.

We don’t always see freedom in the correct way. In general, we think of freedom as being what I want, when I want, how I want. We see Freedom as being all about me.

Maybe this will be a familiar story to you, this story is about Rob, but maybe there is someone that you know who finds themselves in the same situation.

Rob grew up in a very strict home. His parents loved him too much to let the pain and suffering of the world affect his son. They monitored his friends, they monitored his activities, all in a grand effort to make sure that he was safe. But growing up, Rob wouldn’t tell you that he felt safe, no, the word that Rob would use is trapped. He felt confined, forced to live a life that his parents were choosing for him. He resented the fact that his parents didn’t seem to trust him, that they were stopping him from really experiencing life the way that imagined life should and could be experienced.

When Rob finally graduated from High School he was ecstatic. His excitement didn’t come from the fact that he had good marks, and even earned a few large scholarships. He wasn’t excited because he had been accepted into a number of impressive universities. No, Rob was excited because he saw his chance at freedom.

When September came, a whole new world opened up for Rob. Suddenly he was in a brand new place were no body knew who he was. Finally, he would have the opportunity to make defining choices on his own.

Rob had never had a girlfriend before, now there were thousands of girls his age on campus.

Rob had never had a drink before, now there were people all over the residence inviting him to parties where everybody drinks.

It was overwhelming, exciting, exhilarating and scary all at the same time.

Rob took advantage of his new found freedom. He began to become a person that his parents would not recognize. He found himself becoming two different people. The Rob that people knew on campus, and the Rob that talked to his parents on the phone.

All through this time period, Rob had no accountability. He had no relationships that carried him through. He was basically free to do what he wanted, when he wanted and nobody would ever know.
