Summary: Many people are dying and their souls are going to hell! One major reason is that far too many preachers are messing up the pulpit. This sermon uses an amusing baseball story to illustrate the point.

It’s Time To Quit Messing Around

Matthew 7:15-23

15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

16You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?

17Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

20Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

21"Not everyone who says to Me, ’Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

22Many will say to Me in that day, ’Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’

23And then I will declare to them, ’I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

As you all know, one of our members died recently.

One of the things that bothered him before he died…

Was the fact that many years ago

he said the “Sinner’s Prayer”

just to get rid of the preacher who came to his house.

He told me that he doubted his salvation.

I have no doubt that his soul is in heaven today…

But he died wondering if he would make it to heaven.

On that same day, another man died.

He didn’t want any preachers at his funeral.

He didn’t want anybody to mention God.

One of our members has suggested to me

that his soul is in heaven because he was kind to her!

Why do we have all this confusion about salvation?

What really is needed to make it to heaven?

Today’s story is about baseball. The names have been changed to protect the innocent. Back in 1901, the Evansville River Rats baseball team was competing in the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa Minor League. Mike Randle was the manager of the team. When necessary, Mike would also play in the games.

One hot Sunday afternoon, Randle decided to start a young pitcher who had just joined the team. The veteran pitcher who had been scheduled to start that day wasn’t happy about it. He told Manager Randle that it was a big mistake to play the kid.

We’ll get back to that story a little later!

In our Bible text today…

Jesus talks about salvation.

Let’s see what Jesus had to say.

Point #1

Many Church People Will End Up in Hell

21"Not everyone who says to Me, ’Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

22Many will say to Me in that day, ’Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’

It doesn’t say they tried to prophesy!

They did prophesy in Jesus name!

It doesn’t say they tried to cast out demons and devils!

They did cast them out in Jesus name!

It doesn’t say they thought about doing many wonderful works

They did many wonderful works in Jesus name!

These verses in Matthew should scare us!

Jesus said not a few…. but MANY!

Many shall come to me on that day,,,

And what will they be told by Jesus, “I NEVER KNEW YOU!”
