Summary: the learning of being content in any given situation.

I’ve Learned

Philippians 4: 10-13

Muhammad Ali - He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing.

Menander - Know thyself means this, that you get acquainted with what you know, and what you can do.

Robert Cushing - The fact is, that to do anything in the world worth doing, we must not stand back shivering and thinking of the cold and danger, but jump in and scramble through as well as we can.

Thomas Edison - If we all did the things we are capable of, we would astound ourselves.

Php 4:11 I have learned – “From God”. He only can teach this. In everything, to be content - Joyfully and thankfully patient, I have learned; I know; I am instructed; I can.

I have learned--The I in Greek is emphatic. I leave it to be discontented. I, for my part, have learned, by the teaching of the Holy Spirit, to be content in every State – Condition, Situation, Circumstances.

Hebrew 5:8 - Though he was God’s Son, he learned trusting-obedience by what he suffered, just as we do.

Content--The Greek, literally expresses "independent of others, and having sufficiency in one’s self.", whose sufficiency is not in self, but in God

2Corinthians 3:5 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

1Timothy 6:6 - A devout life does bring wealth, but it’s the rich simplicity of being yourself before God

1Timothy 6:8 - if we have bread on the table and shoes on our feet, that’s enough.

Hebrew 13:5 - Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said,

“I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”[a

Php 4:12 I know how to be abased - Having too little of what is needful for the body.

Abased--in low circumstances

2Cr 4:8 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair.

And to abound - Having to help others also

Paul transitions from scarcity to plenty, and from plenty to scarcity. I am instructed - Literally, I am initiated in that mystery, unknown to all but Christians.

Both to be full and to be hungry - For one day Both to abound and to want - For a longer season.

Php 4:13 I can do all things — Greek, “I have strength for all things”; not merely “how to be abased and how to abound.” Universal Power

through Christ which strengtheneth me — The “In Him who give power,”

1) Living union and

2) Identification with Him, who is my strength (

Gal-2:20 - My old self has been crucified with Christ.[a] It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
