JEHOVAH MEKODDISHKEM- THE GOD WHO MAKES YOU HOLY

Exodus 31:13

Introduction:

Exodus 19:1-6 (NIV)

“In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt--on the very day--they came to the Desert of Sinai. After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: `You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites."

God’s plan for Israel was to be His treasured possession, a Kingdom of priests, and a holy Nation. In the New Testament, we find that God has the same plan for believers in Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:9-10 (NIV)

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

This morning, we are going to study the name Jehovah Mekoddishkem- The LORD who makes you holy.

Exodus 31:13 (NIV)

“Say to the Israelites, `You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy."

The name Jehovah Mekoddishkem tells us…

1. That God sets His children apart.

When a person is saved, God sets you apart. The word holy means to be set apart. Just as God set the Nation of Israel apart as His treasured possession, so are Christians set apart as God’s treasured possessions. A Christian has been bought by the blood of Jesus and no longer belongs to himself but to God.

1 Peter 1:13-16 (NIV)

“Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.”

The name Jehovah Mekoddishkem tells us…

2. That God wants us to live holy lives.

Christians are to be holy because God is holy. How do you live a holy life in all that you do?

You live a holy life by…

? Preparing your mind for action.

You prepare your mind by focusing on God’s Word and God’s voice. What you think on is what you are preparing for. If you think about how you are defeated or what you are afraid of; that is what you are preparing for is defeat and fear.

You live a holy life by…

? Being self-controlled.

This is a word that is self-explanatory. You have to decide if you are going to be Holy Spirit led or flesh led.

You live a holy life by…

? Setting your hope on Jesus.

Regardless of what you are going through, if Jesus is your Savior; then you will spend eternity with Him.

You live a holy life by…

? Being an obedient child of God.

God’s Word tells us that the way that we show our love for God is by obeying His commands and by loving others. You must choose to follow God or your evil desires.

Conclusion:

God has set His children apart. We are to be different than the world. We are to be holy because God our Father is holy.
