Summary: A sermon showing how a rainbow reminds us of the Saviour. Beauty, blood, barrier, bow.

INTRODUCTION

The rainbow has been ‘hijacked’ by homosexuals. The Rainbow Network is one such example. It claims to be “the biggest lesbian and gay website in the UK”. Belfast Pride is another example.

Why have these perverts ’hijacked’ the rainbow? The answer is simple. The rainbow speaks of Christ. Sodomites hate Christ. This is their way of attacking the Christ of the Bible.

How does a rainbow remind us of Christ?

1. BEAUTY

There aren’t many more beautiful sights in nature than a rainbow. Christ is beautiful. Song of Solomon 5:16 "His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely".

The beauty of His words. John 7:46 "Never man spake like this man".

The beauty of His works. Matthew 13:54 "And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?"

The beauty of His wounds.

"Wounded for me, wounded for me,

There on the cross He was wounded for me;

Gone my transgressions, and now I am free,

All because Jesus was wounded for me".

2. BLOOD

The red of the rainbow reminds us of our Saviour’s blood. Rainbows always come in pairs. We usually only see one. But there is another one hiding. The one we can see is called the primary rainbow. The one we can’t see is called the secondary rainbow. The primary rainbow is red at the top. This teaches us that when God looks on His redeemed people He sees the blood of Christ covering them. The secondary rainbow is red at the bottom. This teaches us that we can look up with the eyes of our mind at the blood covering us and be comforted. God sees the blood and is satisfied. Man sees the blood and is soothed.

"It is His Word, God’s precious Word,

It stands forever true;

’When I the Lord shall see the blood,

I will pass over you’".

3. BARRIER

Because of the clouds we can only see half the rainbow. Sometimes the nearness of Christ’s presence is not felt as much as we would like. The clouds of disobedience, disability, discouragement and disease come between us and our Beloved.

Isaiah 54:8 "In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer".

"What though clouds are hovering o’er me,

And I seem to walk alone—

Longing ’mid my cares and crosses,

For the joys that now are flown—

If I’ve Jesus, “Jesus only”,

Then my sky will have a gem;

He’s the Sun of brightest splendour,

And the Star of Bethlehem".

4. BOW

A rainbow is really a bow without an arrow.

It speaks of an entrance. It is an arch, an open door. John 10:9 "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture". We are still in ‘the day of grace’. The door is still open. You can still be saved.

It speaks of an event. The return of Christ. The bow is pointing upwards. Luke 21:28 "when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh".
