The Gospel According To Matthew

1. The Author of the Book - Matthew = “Gift of Jehovah”. He was …

A. … a Hebrew, from the tribe of Levi (Mk 2:14; Lu 5:27)

C. … personally called to be a disciple by Jesus (Mat 9:9)

A. Date - Seems to have been written before 70 AD, since the destruction of Jerusalem is spoken of as a yet future event. Probably between 50 - 70 AD.

B. Place - Tradition places the writing in Antioch.

A. To present Christ as the fulfillment of the OT messianic prophesies (Mat 1:22-23; 2:6,15,18; 4:15-16; 8:17; 9:13; 10:35; 11:10,29; 12:7,18,21; 13:14,15; 15:8-9; 21:5; 24:15; 27:9).

B. To present Jesus as the rejected King of the Jews (Mat 23:37)
