Summary: God’s intentional plan in eternity guarantees salvation to all His children.

Let’s look further into Jesus as the Light:
And the light shineth in darkness;
Notice this is present tense. The Light “shines.” This is important because Christ has shined and always does, but also because in the next part of the verse we see that the darkness comprehended (past tense) it not.
and the darkness comprehended it not.
This says a lot about the fallen nature of man. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil (Jn. 3:19). The darkness had no ability to grasp the light. However,
6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
God sent a witness to testify about the Light which the darkness couldn’t perceive. Since we belong to Him we are called children of the Light and we bear good fruit (I Thess. 5:1-11).
9That was the true Light,
Compare this to Second Corinthians: For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light (II Cor. 11:13-14). This true light is true life
which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
What does it mean that He lighted? Some say every man has a trace of light, but I don’t think so. The light shines, but the darkness can’t perceive. But God commands the light to shine in darkness (II Cor. 4:6) so we can see. There are two groups of people here. There is the world who knows Him not and then there are those sent into the world. These are given illumination from the God of Light. This illumination is life (compare to :4)
I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world (Jn. 17:14-16).
Lights “every” man. Compare this to what we read later in John: No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me (Jn. 6:44-45). This is a quote from Isaiah 53:13 where we learn that all who are taught are God’s children: All thy children shall be taught of the LORD (Is. 54:13).
10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
When He came into the world His own creation didn’t even recognize Him. They were ignorant. His own (the Jews) didn’t receive Him.
12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
All Jews thought they were sons of God. Yet only those that received Him are said to be such.
How did they “become” sons? The word means to be produced or begotten!
Think of Psalm 2:7—“I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee”
The evidence of this in the believing on His name: If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him (I Jn. 2:29).
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother (I Jn. 3:9-10)
The basis for it is:
13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
“Blood” is plural. That is, it is not of Jewish blood.
Will of the flesh= inherent desire
Will of man= decree or desire of a man (singular)
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever (I Pt. 1:23).
This goes all the way back to our creation. We were created for the purpose of being saved. Think of how this affects the everlasting covenant.
