Summary: Today we will begin a two part series talking about Justification by Faith. As a foundation for our study we are going to examine Romans 4 and the first two verses of Romans 5.

Romans 5:1

INTRODUCTION

• Today we will begin a two (or three) part series talking about Justification by Faith. As a foundation for our study we are going to examine Romans 4 and the first two verses of Romans 5.

• To Justify means to Acquit

• We are justified (acquitted of the punishment and constraints of the law) by faith

I. ROMANS 4:1-12 ABRAHAM IS THE FATHER OF FAITH

A. Verses 1-5 Abraham was justified by faith

B. Verses 6-8 King David was justified by faith

1. Imputeth righteousness means “to put righteousness to”

C. Verses 9-12 Talks about Abraham being the father of faith to both Jews and Gentiles.

1. He was righteous before he was circumcised and righteous after he was circumcised.

2. Interpretation - Justification by faith is not bound by law

II. ROMANS 4:13-21 THE PROMISES OF GOD ONLY COME THROUGH FAITH

A. Verse 13 The promise could not be produced by the law because the law had restraints. The promise could only be produced by faith because of the miracle of righteousness.

1. Faith in God produces righteous living

B. Verse 16 What is the “it” in Verse 16 where it says, “Therefore “it” is of faith, that it might be by grace…” Answer - The Promise of Abraham to the Heirs of Faith (V14)

C. Verse 17 The activity of faith

1. It was God who “called things that be not as though they were” WHEN HE WAS SPEAKING TO THE DEADNESS OF ABRAHAMS BODY AND SARAHS WOMB!

D. Abraham was operating on a Word from God

1. Verse 18 “…so shall thy seed be.”

2. Verse 19 He was not swayed by natural circumstances. HE DIDN’T EVEN CONSIDER THEM!

3. Verse 20-21 “He staggered not at the promises of God through unbelief.”

a) He was strong in faith

b) Giving Glory to God

c) He was FULLY persuaded that God was able and willing to keep His promises.

III. ROMANS 4:22-25 BECAUSE OF ABRAHAMS FAITH, GOD IMPUTED (PUT TO) RIGHTEOUSNESS UPON HIM.

A. Faith produces righteous living

B. Verse 24 tells us that we can have righteousness imputed to us also if we believe in God. (Him that raised up Jesus from the dead)

C. Verse 25 Jesus was delivered to Calvary to pay for our offenses and He was raised from the dead for our justification.

1. Justification is translated “acquittal”.

2. Jesus went to Calvary to pay for our offenses, died and then rose again to judge us free from the penalty of our sins by acquitting us!

IV. ROMANS 5:1-2 THE RESULTS

A. Verse 1 - We are acquitted by faith

1. We now possess peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

a) Peace is nothing missing and nothing broken

b) Jesus must be more than a man to us, JESUS IS LORD!

B. Verse 2 - By Jesus we have access… by faith into “this” grace wherein we stand.

1. The grace (abilities of God) that produces the Blessing of Abraham in the life of the Believer!

2. Causes us to rejoice in the hope (blueprint of) the Glory of God.

CLOSING

The revelation of Calvary can change both your life and your eternity!
