Summary: - This parable teaches us that God is not an unjust judge but a loving Father. - Don’t stop praying. - “When life is rough pray, when life is great pray.” Anonymous

What will happen when we fail to pray?

1. When we fail to pray, we will FAINT. V. 1

Luke 18:1 One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.

Explanation:

- Luke 18, Jesus tells the story of a widow who refuses to give up.

- The purpose of the parable is that we might not lose heart in prayer.

- Often we stop praying because we lose heart. In the context of this parable, this is the source of discouragement that Jesus is addressing.

- Jesus challenges His people not to lose heart during the times when answer to prayer is delayed.

• The Early Church.

Acts 12:5 So Peter was kept in prison, but fervent prayer for him was persistently made to God by the church (assembly).

* Don’t give up, keep praying and don’t lose heart! God will move in His time!

Application: At all times we ought to pray.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 Never stop praying.

“If you only pray when you’re in trouble, you’re in trouble.” Anonymous

2. When we fail to pray, we will FALL. Vv. 2-5

Explanation: God wants us to be dependent on Him.

Illustration: Joshua and the leaders

Joshua 9:14 So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult the Lord.

Application:

Luke 18:4 The judge ignored her for a while, but finally he said to himself, ‘I don’t fear God or care about people,

Luke 18:5 but this woman is driving me crazy. I’m going to see that she gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant requests!’”

- Psalm 118:8 “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.”

- Someone said, ´Relying on God is man’s greatest wisdom.´

- Matthew 26:41 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”

3. When we fail to pray, we will FAIL Vv. 6-8

Luke 18:7 Even he rendered a just decision in the end. So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?

Luke 18:8 I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?”

- Someone said, “Without faith, we have no hope. The strength of our faith comes from the time we spend with Him each day.”

Illustration: Jesus and Peter

Luke 22:31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat.

Luke 22:32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

Application: Without faith we will fail BUT with faith we pray and prevail!

Matthew 21:21 Then Jesus told them, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen.

Matthew 21:22 You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.”

Conclusion:

- God is looking for faith on the earth, this faith is seen most clearly in praying people.

- When the Lord returns, will there be faith on earth?
