I. EXORDIUM:

Have you tried to do it all by works to be justified before GOD?

II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:

Believers

III. OBJECTIVES:

To show we are righteous because of what LORD JESUS CHRIST have done, not on what we can do.

IV. TEXT:

Luke 13:10-17 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue,

he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight.

When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!”

Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!

But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.”

But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water?

This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?”

This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.

V. THESIS:

If you try to keep the law, you are enemies of grace

Luke 13:17 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.

VI. TITLE:

Law Keeper vs. Grace

VII. EXPLICATION:

A. Author: Dr. Luke, The Beloved Physician (close friend and traveling companion of Paul)

B. Audience: Theophilus (Greek means friend of GOD, a Christian)

C. Purpose: To give a connected and orderly narrative of the life of CHRIST as seen by eyewitnesses

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. On the rest day, the LORD JESUS CHRIST by grace still teach but not seen as work by law keeper.

Luke 13:10 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue,

1. It's interesting to notice that the law keeper which is the synagogue leader never noticed the LORD JESUS CHRIST working on the Sabbath when the LORD of Grace taught in their synagogue? Why is that? Because in their hypocrisy and greed, the teaching benefited them but the healing of the woman did not.

B. The LORD of Grace noticed the suffering, but the law keeper never noticed the woman for 18 years.

Luke 13:11-12 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight.

When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!”

1. In the law keeper's hypocrisy, they never noticed the woman needing healing for 18 years. Keeping the law can't meet your needs only the LORD of Grace can.

C. The LORD of Grace proclaimed healing to stop suffering and Satan but law keeper shuts it's mouth.

1. The law can't meet our needs but grace can.

Luke 13:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!

2. The woman praised GOD because she's the recipient.

3. The law keeper can't contribute anything, it only shuts its mouth.

D. The law keeper got angry because it was violated, enforced the law more but the LORD of Grace sensed it as hypocrisy.

1. The law keeper got angry but is not thankful that the woman who got well got added to their synagogue membership.

Luke 13:13-15 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!

But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.”

But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water?

2. The law keeper is hypocrites in their works thinking they can be justified by the works of the law.

Galatians 3:11 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”

E. The LORD of Grace saw the woman's faith and Satan in her but the law keeper shuts its mouth.
