[My purpose is] that you may know the full truth and understand with certainty and security against error the accounts (histories) and doctrines of the faith of which you have been informed and in which you have been orally instructed.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Guard ourselves

"And He said to them, Guard yourselves and keep free from all covetousness (the immoderate desire for wealth, the greedy longing to have more);"

Luke 8:14 (Amplified Bible)

And as for what fell among the thorns, these are [the people] who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked and suffocated with the anxieties and cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not ripen (come to maturity and perfection).

Hebrews 13:5 (Amplified Bible)

Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]

Proverbs 23:4-5 (Amplified Bible)

Weary not yourself to be rich; cease from your own [human] wisdom.

Will you set your eyes upon wealth, when [suddenly] it is gone? For riches certainly make themselves wings, like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

Riches and wealth are called as "thorns" which will choke us up, we don't need them, but when GOD gives it to us, it will not choke us but make us more nearer to Him than before.

B. Man's life is not based on his abundance

"for a man’s life does not consist in and is not derived from possessing overflowing abundance or that which is over and above his needs."

Proverbs 16:16 (Amplified Bible)

How much better it is to get skillful and godly Wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

Wisdom is much better than gold.

Matthew 6:25-26 (Amplified Bible)

Therefore I tell you, stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater [in quality] than food, and the body [far above and more excellent] than clothing?

Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?

1 Timothy 6:6-8 (Amplified Bible)

[And it is, indeed, a source of immense profit, for] godliness accompanied with contentment (that contentment which is a sense of inward sufficiency) is great and abundant gain.

For we brought nothing into the world, and obviously we cannot take anything out of the world;

But if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content (satisfied).

What's important is contentment from inward sufficiency.

IX. CONCLUSION:

We need to guard ourselves from love of money and to honor the LORD with our wealth.
