Summary: We must not linger over the memory of our sins.

Longing for Sodom

January 6, 2013 Evening Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: We must not linger over the memory of our sins.

Focus Passage: Genesis 18-19

Supplemental Passage: We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, (2 Corinthians 10:5 NASB)

Introduction: Too many Christians plan vacations to Las Vegas or to other casinos. They plan “party weekends” where they know they are going to get drunk or get high. They plan trysts with a sexual partner. Or they visit these sins with fondness in their memories.

I. Sin Required Judgment (vs 18:20-21, 19:1-11)

a. Now the men of Sodom were wicked exceedingly and sinners against the LORD. (Genesis 13:13 NASB)

b. God sent two angels to verify that the sin was as bad as the stench (18:21, 19:1)

c. The men of Sodom tried to rape the angels and wouldn’t take Lot’s two virgin daughters instead (19:4-9)

d. God said He would destroy Sodom and Gomorrah (19:13)

II. Abraham Begged for the Righteous (vs 22-33)

a. Abraham asked God if there were 50 righteous, would He spare the cities (18:24)

b. Abraham bargained all the way down to 10 righteous men, but only Lot could be found (18:32)

c. We know understand that there is no one who is righteous on their own, but only through the blood of Christ.

d. Woe to the Christian that tries to bargain with God about sin.

III. Lot’s Wife Longed for Sodom (19:12-29)

a. The angels warned Lot to take his family and flee (vs 12-13)

b. Lot warned his two sons-in-law, but they thought he was joking (vs 14)

c. Lot’s wife looked back at the destruction (vs 26)

Invitation: Too often, we, as Christians, look back at our sin. Sometimes, it’s to longingly reflect and relive. Sometimes it’s looking ahead to sin. How can we, who are dead to sin, desire to sin?
