Summary: To show that even the mother of JESUS in the flesh is not a doer of the WORD.

I. EXORDIUM:

Do you keep and do GOD's WORDS?

Yes. Do what you know from the WORD. But first priority is know the WORD so you can apply it. James 1:22

James 1:22

But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].

II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:

Believers

III. OBJECTIVES:

To show that even the mother of JESUS in the flesh is not a doer of the WORD.

IV. TEXT:

Luke 2:19

But Mary was keeping within herself all these things (sayings), weighing and pondering them in her heart.

V. THESIS:

Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for in and through You, we keep Your WORD to remember it and apply it in our daily lives, and our minds are renewed by Your WORDS.

Hebrews 12:2

Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].

VI. TITLE:

Mary remembers but cannot renew mind

VII. EXPLICATION:

A. Author: Dr. Luke, The Beloved Physician (close friend and traveling companion of Paul)

B. Audience: Theophilus (Greek means friend of GOD, a Christian)

C. Purpose: To give a connected and orderly narrative of the life of CHRIST as seen by eyewitnesses

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Mary can remember

"But Mary was keeping within herself all these things (sayings),"

Kept or "suntereo" in Greek meaning:

1. to keep closely together

2. to conserve

3. mentally to remember (and obey)

4. keep, observe, preserve

Illustration: Like the new wine is kept on new bottles, both are preserved (KEPT). New testament methodologies need to be kept in the New Testament. We can't keep old testament ways of worship in the New Testament.

Matthew 9:17

Neither is new wine put in old wineskins; for if it is, the skins burst and are torn in pieces, and the wine is spilled and the skins are ruined. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.

Luke 5:38-39

But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.

And no one after drinking old wine immediately desires new wine, for he says, The old is good or better.

Illustration: Old dogs can't learn new tricks. It's the same with believers who keep on holding to their own old traditions. That's why we are highly advised by GOD's WORDS to always re-NEW our minds.

Mary does the right thing in keeping GOD's WORDS in her heart, but she ended there. She never did it, she never applied it.

The LORD JESUS said in front of many people that His mother and brothers does not listen to His WORDS to obey it.

Luke 8:20-21

And it was told Him, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to have an interview with You.

But He answered them, My mother and My brothers are those who listen to the Word of God and do it!

John 7:5

For [even] His brothers did not believe in or adhere to or trust in or rely on Him either.

Matthew 13:55-58

Is not this the carpenter’s Son? Is not His mother called Mary? And are not His brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?

And do not all His sisters live here among us? Where then did this Man get all this?

And they took offense at Him [they were repelled and hindered from acknowledging His authority, and caused to stumble]. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.

And He did not do many works of power there, because of their unbelief (their lack of faith in the divine mission of Jesus).
