INTRODUCTION

Last week we began a series of messages looking at the names used in this passage to describe Christ. Last week we looked at the name, “Wonderful Counselor”. Today we are going to look at the name, “Mighty God”.

I’d like to begin by asking a few questions. I think I’m safe in saying all of us at one time or another has had the miss fortune of having a flat tire. If you’ve had the same kind of luck I’ve had it usually happens at night when it’s extremely cold or when it’s raining or snowing. Have you ever gone to get your spare only to find its flat? When that happens you have two choices. You can sit there and get mad at yourself for not making sure you had a good spare or you can take matters into your own hands and try to find some help. Have you ever taken a wrong turn on a trip and had to stop and ask directions? The point I’m making is all of us at one time or another have needed to find help.

About a year ago a man named James Kim left San Francisco on a combination vacation and business trip with his wife Kati and their two young daughters. After visiting family in Seattle and friends in Portland they intended to take hwy 42 over to the coast. They missed their turn off and decided to take a different route. Because of bad weather, they mistakenly turned onto a logging road and winded up in the mountains. It began to snow and eventually they were snow bound. James kept the motor running to keep the heat going until he ran out of gas. They ate all the food they had. After several days with their food and gas gone James set out on foot to get some help. Two days latter the station wagon with Kati and her girls was spotted by a search party and rescued. James wasn’t as fortunate. Two days after Kati and her girls were rescued a search party found James’ body.

We need to remember it’s very easy to get stranded or lost both physically and spiritually.

We need someone to rescue us. That’s exactly what Jesus can do for us and why Isaiah called Him a wonderful counselor!! Isaiah called Him, mighty God because:

I. HE KNOWS WHERE YOU ARE

A. Jesus knows you better than you know yourself

1. He knows where you are spiritually no matter how well you try to hide it. (Read John 4:16-18)

a. It never ceases to amaze me how people’s conversation changes when they find out I’m a Pastor.

II. HE KNOWS WHAT SHAPE YOU ARE IN

A. The best example is the prodigal son. (Read Luke 15:22-24)

1. The father knew his son’s sin but forgave him

2. Like the Prodigal Son we all at one time or another have wandered away. (Read Romans 3:23)

III. HE KNOWS HOW MUCH TIME YOU HAVE LEFT

A. Although we don’t know when all of us here will someday face death (Read Hebrews 9:27)

1. That means we die when God we reach the appointed time God has set.

B. Although we don’t know when death will come we do know we will be judged.

IV. HE KNOWS THE EFFORST YOU HAVE MADE TO SAVE YOURSELF

A. Most people try to be good and do the right thing. But no matter how hard we try we eventually fall flat on our face. (Read Ephesians 2:8-9)

V. HE KNOWS THAT YOU NEED HIM (Read Acts 4:12)

A. Not everyone who is lost gets found. James Kim died trying to find help. Many people die trying to be good enough to please God. (read Acts 4:12)

B. Even though God knows we need Him before He can save us we need to call on Him. (Read Romans 10:13)

CONCLUSION

Jesus is our Mighty God. He has the power to save anyone who calls on His name. To call on His name all you have to do is repent of your sins and ask Him to come into your heart as Lord and Savior.
