Summary: The message answers the question why God abandoned Jesus.

“My God My God why have you forsaken me” Psalm 22 Preached at Carr Memorial

1. The author of the Psalm David.

• A shepherd (1Sa 16:11). Kills a lion and a bear (1Sa 17:34-36).

• Anointed king, while a youth, by the prophet Samuel,(1Sa 16:1,13; Ps 89:19-37). Chosen of God

• David was a armor-bearer and musician at Saul's court (1Sa 16:21-23). Slays Goliath (1Sa 17).

• David lived in seasons of great danger and lack because King Saul desired to kill him

2. This person whoever the psalm is referring to was Forsaken (Abandoned)

• This one feels bewildered as though he does not grasp why.

• This one feels as though his labors are in vain, he has been a failure

• As though the crowds have turned against him

3. The Forsaken One had some relationship with God he says, “MY God, My God”

• Note My God My God the repetition of the plea shows the intensity of the agony.

• There seems to be some deep intense personal relationship as though they are one

• Recall some text about God and Jesus’s relationship Matthew says, 27"All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son Me and the Father are one

• Peter tells us we heard this on the Sacred Mountain "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.

4. The one who is forsaken asks Why?

• Why would My God forsake Me? Others may deserve such, but I cannot figure out why He

would forsake Me.”

• Jesus experienced separation on the cross. Jesus had known great pain and suffering (both physical and emotional) during His life. Yet He had never known separation or alienation from God His Father. At this moment He experienced what He had not yet ever experienced. There was a significant sense in which Jesus rightly felt forsaken by God at this moment.

• Why was Jesus forsaken? Habakkuk 1:13 Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing. It’s not that God can’t be near sin for Jesus was near and so is God in the thick of sin. But

It’s that the thought of what sin does to us that God can’t stand to see or tolerate

5. My God My God why have you forsaken Me? I did because the world needed a Savior

• Born this day in the city of David is a Savior Christ the Lord

• For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

• Jesus became the atonement; Jesus became the accursed one, Jesus becomes the Sacrificial Lamb, God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

• Jesus was forsaken that we will never be, remember this, Our pain will not last

Forever “He will wipe away our tears”

• Jesus was forsaken that he might bear our burdens. Give our burdens to the

Lord “Come unto me all who are tired weak and heavy burdened I will give you rest”

• Remember when you are weak , abandoned, forsaken “God is stronger”

• Keep your eyes on Jesus for when you pray he answers

• My God My God why did you do it? John 3:16 I love you written in Red
