Summary: A study of the Gospel of Matthew 5: 27 – 37

Matthew 5: 27 – 37

One Eye Left Handed Men

27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 31 “Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery. 33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

Commandment number 7 is ‘Thou shalt not commit adultery.’ Today we might be thinking ‘old school’. For what is called evil is good and good is called evil. There are less and less moral absolutes. However, with God Almighty – El Shaddai – there is no confusion. You see we all have to understand that He makes and keeps all the rules. Our job is to just obey.

Our Master and King, our Lord Jesus Christ, is going to turn everyone on defense. For He Is going to teach in more detail what His Seventh Commandment means.

27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

I have learned that we humans read things and take for granted that we know what the words mean. So, before we go on, I want us all to understand what the word ‘sin’ is? It means ‘missing the mark’. You see our Holy Jehovah Elyon – The Lord Most High – has established 10 Commandments for us to obey or ‘hit the target’ at all times. When we ‘sin’ we miss the target or His Standards. You see we enter this world of competition with a handicap- our sinful being. Yet, still our Lord maintains His Rule that we are to hit His Target of Perfection at all times. He says so in this chapter in verse 48, “48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.’

Now you all might be thinking well, ‘this is not fair’. Again I quote the apostle Paul as to whether God Is fair or not. We read this in his letter to the Romans in chapter 9, “14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! 15 For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.”16 So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to the Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.” 18 Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens. 19 You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?” 20 But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor? 22 What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory, 24 even us whom He called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?”
