¡§One More Mission¡¨ ¡V Num 13:27-33

When I was a young boy growing up I wanted to be a fighter pilot

„X The fact that my dad flew bombers in WW2 probably had something to do with it

„X He had a big steel trunk full of military paraphernalia he brought back from the war with him ¡V his flying helmet, goggles, uniforms, medals, gas masks, insignia from captured German soldiers

„X As kids we read war comics, bought and assembled model planes, my favorite was the ¡§spitfire¡¨ which was the most successful fighter plane of WW2

„X Then our family became Christian and my goal of becoming a fighter pilot was not compatible with things of God

„X But deep down I still have that longing to fly at Mach 2 with my hair on fire especially when I see movies like ¡§Top Gun¡¨

„X One thing has changed since then though, my preference has changed from flying fighters planes to Apache attack helicopters

„X These past couple of weeks have seen young pilots pumped with testosterone flying these helicopters into battle over Iraq

„X It must be a terrifying sight for enemy soldiers to see a swarm of these Apaches coming straight at you knowing the firepower that is going to be unleashed on you

„X They are regarded as flying tanks

„X But tough as these helicopters are, they ran into stiff resistance last week

„X How many of you have seen ¡§Black Hawk Down?¡¨

„X Story of the rescue of a couple of helicopter crews shot down by small arms fire in Mogadishu

„X The Iraq soldiers used that same strategy against the Apaches this past week

„X And even though the Apache is a lot tougher bird than the Black Hawk, the pilots came back rattled after the experience

„X No part of the Apache armor is phased by normal small arms fire, and can even take hits from 25mm weapons on most parts of its exterior

„X And even though they only lost one helicopter, one pilot said, ¡§It was like flying into a hornets nest¡¨

„X And I bet, some of those pilots were not as gun-ho as they were the first time out

„X But a soldier doesn¡¦t have the option of saying, ¡§Where¡¦s my mum? I don¡¦t want to go back, it¡¦s too dangerous, I want to go home,

„X No, they have to rearm, refuel and get back into the sky for another mission because they are a integral part of the battle plan

„X Their grunt buddies on the front line are relying on their close air support so they just can¡¦t walk away

This is very much like our Christian walk

„X There is never the option of walking away when things get a little tough

„X We have people relying on us, God, our brothers and sisters, and the unsaved

„X God wants us to rearm, refuel and get back out there for another mission

„X Check out this guy from the OT ¡V his name is Caleb

„X Find the story over in Num 13:

„X God asks Moses to pick out 12 spies to check out the land of Canaan

„X Come back and 10 of the spies start looking for Momma!

„X Numbers 13:27 This was their report to Moses: ¡§We arrived in the land you sent us to see, and it is indeed a magnificent country¡Xa land flowing with milk and honey. Here is some of its fruit as proof. 28 But (Bad ¡§but¡¨) the people living there are powerful, and their cities and towns are fortified and very large. We also saw the descendants of Anak who are living there! 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev, and the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan Valley.¡¨

„X These are the Momma boys ¡V ¡§they are too big, to powerful and too many and I want to go home¡¨

„X 30 But (Good ¡§but¡¨) Caleb tried to encourage the people as they stood before Moses. ¡§Let¡¦s go at once to take the land,¡¨ he said. ¡§We can certainly conquer it!¡¨ 31 But the other men who had explored the land with him answered, ¡§We can¡¦t go up against them! They are stronger than we are!¡¨ 32 So they spread discouraging reports about the land among the Israelites: ¡§The land we explored will swallow up any who go to live there. All the people we saw were huge. 33 We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. We felt like grasshoppers next to them, and that¡¦s what we looked like to them!¡¨

„X These guys were awfulizers ¡V looking for the worst in every situation

„X Yet two, Caleb and Joshua were different. They had faith. They knew God was at his best when things are at their worst
