1 Cor 6:12-20 ¡V Our Bodies and Sex are Sacred - Part 2

When God created the Heavens and the earth, everything He created was declared ¡§very good¡¨

„X He declared the light good, the sea and dry land was good, the trees were good, sun and moon were good, the birds were good, the animals were good,

„X There was however one thing he declared not good, what was that? ¡§It is not good that man should be alone¡¨ (Gen 2:18)

„X So he provided a helper suitable for him ¡V it was not ¡§Steve¡¨ but ¡§Eve¡¨

„X So right here at the very beginning, in Gen 2:24 God spelt out the only acceptable form of sexual expression

„X Genesis 2:24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

„X Not ¡§joined¡¨ to everyone who comes along, but to ¡§his wife¡¨

Got some tape here. What makes this tape special? Its stickiness

„X What¡¦s happens to this piece of tape is used over and over? Loses what makes it special

„X The more we misuse our sexuality, the more we lose what makes us special

„X So in God¡¦s eyes, the only acceptable form of sexuality is 1) between a male and female, and 2) within the divine institution of marriage

„X So God ordained the sacred institution of marriage, Marriage Ceremony starts of with ¡§Marriage is a divine institution ordained by God¡¨

„X Even within the church we need to put the ¡§sacred¡¨ back into the institution of marriage

So from this passage we learn a number of principles regarding marriage and sexuality

1. It is not good that man should be alone, in other words, we men are hopeless by ourselves, we need help

2. God ordained the sacred institution of marriage

3. Only acceptable form of marriage in God¡¦s eyes is between a male and female

4. And the only acceptable form of sexual expression is within the sacred marriage relationship

Last week in 1 Cor 6 we learned a number of things about the use of our bodies. What were they?

„X They belong to God v.13

„X Our bodies are members of Christ Himself v.15

„X They are a temple for the Holy Spirit v.19

„X We bring a curse on ourselves when we misuse them v.18

„X Our bodies are to be used as a rousing expression of praise to God v.20

„X So in summary, God has given us our bodies in sacred trust to use for His praise and glory

„X I also think its interesting that Paul does not use the scare mongering that usually accompanies a lecture on sex

„X No mention of AIDS, VD, unwanted pregnancies, etc

„X He doesn¡¦t say, ¡§flee AIDS¡¨, or flee genital warts, or Herpes, he says, ¡§Flee fornication¡¨

„X He goes back and appeals to us to honor the bodies God has redeemed through the saving blood of Jesus Christ

„X ¡§How can you misuse something so precious as your body which was brought by the blood of Jesus Christ¡¨

„X We violate a sacred bond that exists between Jesus and ourselves when we misuse our bodies with the wrong use of sex

„X So God regards our bodies as pretty special and of course so should we

So with those principles in place, let¡¦s look at our responsibilities to one another ¡V pick on the men first

„X Over at a music conference last week in Adelaide, with 4000 teenagers in attendance, the subject of what young girls wear to church came up

„X Someone decided to distribute a survey on what is appropriate for girls to wear to church

„X From the tenor of the questions that were asked, this survey was definitely written by a man

„X Gave the impression if the girls were more careful in what they wore to church, we guys wouldn¡¦t have this problem

„X What is the problem with this type of thinking? What is a Christian man supposed to do when he walks down the street and sees even more of what sets him off into a frenzy of lust? Or watches TV, or reads magazines

„X So it¡¦s a bit of a furphie to blame the issue solely on what the girls wear to church, that is shifting the responsibility

„X Girls do have a responsibility, but we¡¦ll get to that in a minute

„X The issue goes back to the heart. Paul is not simply making a suggestion when he says in

„X Romans 8:12-14 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors¡Xnot to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
