James – Walk This Way

Out of the Same Mouth

June 14, 2020

James 3:7-10 NIV

“All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.”

James 1:19 NIV

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

1. Wise words

Proverbs 12:18 NIV

“Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

• We must listen to wise people. We must read the wise thoughts of others.

• When I discover someone who has wisdom, I make sure I spend as much time with them as possible. If you are fool, you will get my counsel, but you will not get my friendship or much of my time.

Proverbs 13:20 NIV

“He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.”

• Wisdom in – Wisdom out. It really is that simple.

• We must allow wisdom to capture all of our hearts.

It’s important to know right from wrong, but it’s also important to know the difference between wise and foolish.

2. Timely words

Proverbs 25:11 NIV

“A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.”

• Many times, simple words, said at strategic times can bring healing. How do we know the right time?

• Story of Ken Jackson – “Dig”

3. Kind words

Proverbs 12:25 NIV

“An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.”

• Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me! Nothing could be less true!

• One of the most comprehensive marriage studies ever done showed that 90% of couples who repeatedly criticized one another ended up divorced.

a. Criticism or sarcasm

b. Contempt and anger

c. Stonewalling or emotionally checking out

d. Separation and divorce

• This is amazing! Almost all divorces started with criticism!

Proverbs 18:21 NIV

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

• If we can control our words, we can save our marriages. In fact, we can save every relationship! Be careful parents – our constant criticism can drive our kids away from us.

• Two types of people – Those who purposely attack with words with no regret, and those who attack with their words and regret it as soon as it happens.

• Wise words

• Timely words

• Kind words
