16:18 And I tell you, you are Peter [Greek, Petros—a large piece of rock], and on this rock [Greek, petra—a huge rock like Gibraltar] I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (the powers of the infernal region) shall not overpower it [or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it].

16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind (declare to be improper and unlawful) on earth must be what is already bound in heaven; and whatever you loose (declare lawful) on earth must be what is already loosed in heaven.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Peter

1. At once left their current business and followed JESUS

Matthew 4:18-20 (Amplified Bible)

4:18 As He was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He noticed two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, throwing a dragnet into the sea, for they were fishermen.

4:19 And He said to them, Come after Me [as disciples—letting Me be your Guide], follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men!

4:20 At once they left their nets and became His disciples [sided with His party and followed Him].

2. Often perceived as the leader of the disciples, because he is outspoken and always volunteers

Matthew 14:28-29 (Amplified Bible)

14:28 And Peter answered Him, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.

14:29 He said, Come! So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and he came toward Jesus.

Matthew 17:4 (Amplified Bible)

17:4 Then Peter began to speak and said to Jesus, Lord, it is good and delightful that we are here; if You approve, I will put up three booths here—one for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah.

3. Requires explanation of the parables from JESUS

Matthew 15:15 (Amplified Bible)

15:15 But Peter said to Him, Explain this proverb (this maxim) to us.

4. Confesses JESUS as the CHRIST and the SON of the Living GOD

Matthew 16:16 (Amplified Bible)

16:16 Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

5. Airs what's inside of him even losing his own face to CHRIST

Matthew 16:22-23 (Amplified Bible)

16:22 Then Peter took Him aside to speak to Him privately and began to reprove and charge Him sharply, saying, God forbid, Lord! This must never happen to You!

16:23 But Jesus turned away from Peter and said to him, Get behind Me, Satan! You are in My way [an offense and a hindrance and a snare to Me]; for you are minding what partakes not of the nature and quality of God, but of men.

6. Asked by JESUS to prove a point

Matthew 17:25-26 (Amplified Bible)

17:25 He answered, Yes. And when he came home, Jesus spoke to him [about it] first, saying, What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly rulers collect duties or tribute—from their own sons or from others not of their own family?

17:26 And when Peter said, From other people not of their own family, Jesus said to him, Then the sons are exempt.

7. Denied and disown JESUS three times

Matthew 26:34 (Amplified Bible)

26:34 Jesus said to him, Solemnly I declare to you, this very night, before a single rooster crows, you will deny and disown Me three times.

8. Wept bitterly after he disown CHRIST

Matthew 26:75 (Amplified Bible)
