Summary: The Why & How to Memorization

Power Through Memorization

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the famous 19th-century poet and artist, was once approached by an elderlyman. The old fellow had some sketches and drawings that he wanted Rossetti to look at and tell him if they were any good, or if they at least showed potential talent. Rossetti looked them over carefully. After the first few, knew that they were worthless, showing not the least sign of artistic talent. But Rossetti was a kindman, and he told the elderly man as gently as possible that the pictures were without much value and showed little talent. He was sorry, but hecould not lie to the man.

The visitor was disappointed, but seemed to expect Rossetti’s judgment. He then apologized for taking up Rossetti’s time, but would he just look at a few more drawings- these done by a young art student? Rossetti looked over the second batch of sketches and immediately became enthusiastic over the talent they revealed. "These," he said, "oh, these are good. This young student has great talent. He should be given every help and encouragement in his career as an artist. He has a great future if he will work hard and stick to it." Rossetti could see that the old fellow was deeply moved. "Who is this fine young artist?" he asked. "Your son?"

"No," said the old man sadly. "It is me - 40 years ago. If only I had heard your praise then! For you see, I got discouraged and gave up - too soon."

Translation

I couldn’t believe that I could actually understand what I was reading!

The phenominal power of the human mind! According to research completed at Cambridge University, it doesn’t matter in what order the letters in a word appear, the only important thing is that the first and last letter are in the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole.

Amazing isn’t it?

Cray Computer

Price $30,000,000

If you take a Cray Computer (one of the largest computers in the world) and measure its wiring, it has about 60,000 miles in total. If you take the brain and look at it in those terms, it has been estimated that it has over 200,000 miles of wiring!

- The brain is the size of two fists

- Cray Computer can make 400 million calculations a second. If it did that for one hundred years it would equal what the brain can do in a minute!

Did you know that we are consciously using less than 1% of our brain’s capabilities.

- Scripture memorization can be one of

the most significant and life-changing disciplines you do as a Christian.

- Unfortunately, it is one of the least

practiced disciplines of the Christian faith.

- Scripture memory enables you to carry parts of God’s Word with you wherever you go; provides messages of hope at critical times in life; purifies your thoughts; and gives direction in times of confusion.

Reasons We Don’t Memorize

We Make Excuses:

- It’s too hard

- I have a poor memory

- I don’t have time

- I am too old

- I have tried before and failed

- Why bother I have my computer

- The real reason is that we choose

not to.

Why we should memorize Scripture

A. IT HELPS ME

1. It transforms my thinking (Romans

12:2)

2. Corrects my heart (Psalm 119:9;

Hebrews 4:12)

3. It Brings Passion For God

(Psalm 119:10)

4. It helps me overcome temptation

(Psalm 119:11;

I like the points about why memorization is good.
