Summary: This message is the first in a series concerning the Biblical Family: In it I hope to show God’s view of a virtuous woman and encourage wives and mothers to examine themselves in light of God’s word, that they might receive praise from their husbands and

INTRODUCTION:

A. Many years ago the Christian Digest carried this little story of a busy mother.

1. A busy mother was one day regretting that she could do so little Christian work. "I shall have only a life of housework to show at last," she said rather sadly to a friend. "Why mother," exclaimed her little daughter, who over heard the words, "all we children will stand up and tell all you’ve done for us - everything! I shouldn’t suppose they’d want anything better than good mothers up in heaven!"

And the friend answered: "The child is right. Earth will send to heaven no better saints than true Christian mothers who have done their best.

2. Praise God for MOTHERS!

B. Many a man has thought about mother’s

1. Aristotle said, "If women be good the half of common wealth may be happy where they are."

2. Napoleon said, "Let France have good mothers and she will have good sons."

3. Abraham Lincoln wrote, "All that I am and hope to be I owe to my angel mother."

4. Henry Ward Beacher commented, "The memory of my sainted mother is the brightest recollection of my early years."

5. I have said, "Mom, I love you!"

6. Praise God for MOTHERS!

C. Our Scripture passage for this morning is a familiar one, but OH! the statement it makes about a woman who has a love for God and family. It is found in Prov 31:10-31 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. {11} The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. {12} She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. {13} She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. {14} She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. {15} She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. {16} She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. {17} She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. {18} She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. {19} She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. {20} She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. {21} She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. {22} She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. {23} Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. {24} She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. {25} Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. {26} She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. {27} She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. {28} Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. {29} Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. {30} Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. {31} Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

- Praise God for MOTHERS!

D. This Proverb is just packed full of good things to say about a Virtuous woman - a great wife and wonderful mother. We are going to cover three areas

1. But first we need to CONSIDER HER WORTH

2. Prov 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman?

a. It would seem the type of woman we are about to look at is a rarity - not real common

b. Yet many of us have found one - that should show us how the Lord watches out for us

3. Notice also it says, for her price is far above rubies. Prov 31:10

a. I know nothing that could buy my mother - she gave all she had to see me raised properly, receive an education, have love, and things

b. She continually put my sisters and I above her own self and unselfishly loved us even when we were unlovable

- And though it may be hard to believe there was a time when I was not very lovable

c. There is nothing, including rubies, that can match her worth!

4. Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. Prov 31:10

a. If you have found one, whether she be your mother, your wife or a friend
