Summary: How many of those who were sick had their day with the Lord

COULD TODAY BE YOUR DAY?

John 5:1-9

Intro: In this reading of scripture we find the pool of Bethesda (House of Mercy). This House of Mercy was surrounded by five porches which lay all matter of sick people lay in the sickened state. Some say these five porches represent the Law of Moses and its inability to help people. There were blind people and lame and paralyzed people, all in their state of helplessness, and blindness, lameness and uselessness. They could not do anything for themselves. These folks represent the sinner. These people were suffering from the effects of sin in their bodies and was waiting for the moving of the water. And such a sad sight it was to see all of these folks as they long to be freed from the things that hindered and impaired them to live normal lives. How awful it must have been to see the folks struggling to get into the water only to be disappointed because someone else beat them to it. But this scripture speaks of a man that had been at the pool for 38 years trying to get into the water. But today was going to be a different day for him. I want to preach on this subject “COULD TODAY BE YOUR DAY?

I. LAME MAN AT BETHESDA (John 5:1-9)

A. (v 5) This man had been in this shape at least 38 years. That means he was in this shape even before Jesus was born

B. How said his family must have been and how burdensome this man must have been to this family

C. But Jesus came walking by Bethesda one day and out of all these sick people Jesus picked one to heal

D. Why only this one you ask?

E. All I can say about this is that everyone will have their day with the Lord

F. (v 8) Jesus told this man to “Rise, Take up thy bed and walk”

G. When Jesus saves us not only does he want us to rise out of our sins he wants us to walk in the newness of life.

1. (Romans 6:4) Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

H. “COULD TODAY BE YOUR DAY”

II. BLIND BARTIMEUS (Mark 10:46:52)

A. Jesus and his discples have come out of Perea and crossed Jordan into Jericho

B. There Jesus met Bartimeus. There are three things that stood out about Bartimeus I want to look at:

1. He had a desperate need

2. He had a knowledge of the need

3. He had a desire to have that need met

C. Bartimeus knew that today was his day and he had to make contact with the Lord

D. Bartimeus addressed Jesus as the Son of David. How ironic this is that the entire nation of Israel was blinded to who the Messiah was, but a blind Jew had true spiritual sight

E. It is a good thing Bartimeus called out on Jesus that day for it is never recorded where Jesus ever passed through that way again

F. COULD TODAY BE THE DAY THE LORD GIVES YOU SOME SPIRITUAL SIGHT

III. THE WIDOWS DEAD SON (Luke 7:11-17)

A. Here we find a widow woman who had also just lost her son and was very bereft

B. (v 13-14) Jesus saw her tears and had compassion on her son. Jesus touched the bier, or the frame on which he was carried and said “Young man I say unto thee, Arise.”

C. (v 15) The dead boy sat up and began to speak

D. COULD TODAY BE THE DAY THAT JESUS SEES YOUR TEARS AND HAS COMPASSION ON YOU

IV. LEGION (Mark 5:17 & Luke 8:26-37)

A. Here we find a man possessed with many devils

B. The word Legion means 2,000-6,000.

C. This man was overtaken by the devil but had become so violent that every effort to restrain him had failed

D. (v 6) Here we find a man worshipping Jesus afar off. This is one of the most pitiful sites in the Bible and is still applies today. A man bowed in adoration, petition and longing and yet hating, defiant and fearful. A double minded man longing for liberty but clinging to the passion of his possession

1. This is so true of the world today. Many people are trying to worship Jesus afar off but they are so entangled with the things of this world it is all in vain. You will never find where Jesus said to this man “Go thy way thy faith has made the whole.” Legion didn’t go to Jesus, Jesus went to Legion

E. COULD TODAY BE THE DAY JESUS RELEASES FROM THE SIN THAT HAS YOU BOUND

V. WOMAN WITH THE ISSUE OF BLOOD (Mark 25-29)

A. (v 25) We find a woman with an issue of blood

B. (v 26) Says she had suffered many thing from many physicians and had spent all she had and was nothing bettered but rather grew worse

1. A lot of people have tried many things to get rid of their sin. They have spent money, looked into the liquor or beer bottle and they are not getting none the better but rather grew worse

C. But someone told her about Jesus and she finally got her chance to touch the hem of his garment

D. Her plans were to touch Jesus and then slip away quietly but it didn’t work that way.

E. It costs Jesus something to heal her. He felt it leave his body and he was not about to let her slip away and miss the blessing of professing her healing in public

F. COULD TODAY BE THE DAY THAT JESUS WILL HEAL YOUR BODY IF YOU WILL JUST PROFESS IT
