Summary: The tree Jesus rested under.

Genesis 18:4 “Rest yourselves under the tree”.

1. HEAT

Genesis 18:1 “He sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.”

Abraham saw three men. It was unusual to see anyone out at this time when most people were resting. Christ met the woman of Samaria “about the sixth hour” i.e. midday.

2. HOSPITALITY

Genesis 18:4 “Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree: And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that you shall pass on: for therefore are you come to your servant.”

This incident is hinted at in Hebrews 13:2. One of the men was the Lord Jesus Christ. If Jesus came to your home, would you have to make any changes to the way you live? We should live as if He is always there.

Abraham helped Sarah - men should help with domestic duties!

3. HOPE

Genesis 18:10 “Sarah thy wife shall have a son.”

God was going to do the impossible. The miraculous birth of Isaac reminds us of the birth of Jesus - born of a virgin.

There was going to be a birth. The Church today needs births - spiritual births i.e. sinners who have been born again.

4. HORROR

Genesis 18:20 “the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and…their sin is very grievous.”

The horror of Sodom’s sin - homosexuality, pride and laziness.

The horror of God’s judgment - hellfire destroyed the cities.

Abraham prayed for these wicked places. He was particularly concerned for his nephew Lot. Let us continue to pray for our relatives.
