Series: Demands of Christ

YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN

John 3:3-7

INTRODUCTION TO SERIES

(Matt 28:18-20) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

(John 14:15) If ye love me, keep my commandments.

(Luke 6:46) And why call ye Me, Lord, Lord and do not the things which I say?

Intro.

When in Seminary I took a Church History mid-term which consisted of five essay questions. I had studied all night, and knew that I nailed it; but when returned I had received an 80%. I completely missed one question and didn’t understand until I read the red note at the end of the answer which read, “The answer sounded great but it wasn’t what I asked.” I focused on the wrong thing.

Nicodemus was a man who also was focusing on the wrong thing.

Observations on Nicodemus

He was a Religious Man “Pharisee”

He was a Righteous Man

He was a Respected Man “Ruler: Sanhedrin”

He was a Respectful Man “Rabbi”

He was a Needful Man

THE NECESSITY OF THE NEW BIRTH (3:3,7)

Not a Suggestion

Not a Good Idea

Repeated Twice for Emphasis (3:3,7)

Great Problem: Focus on the Non-Essentials

Great Need: New Birth

“anothen”: has both meanings; e.g., "from above" in 19:11 & "again" in Gal 4:9)

Several years ago I attended an Evangelism training conference in Chicago, IL. On the last day we were sent into the suburbs for door to door witnessing. I remember distinctly walking up to a very nice home with very well-mannered teenagers outside and then welcomed by a very polite woman. We asked her if see attended church and she explained they were actively involved in a church of another faith and then she asked me if we were part of that group that a person has to be “born again”, almost as if this was a cultish idea.

--She had all the appearances of being a part of the Kingdom of God, but had never been born again.

I. THE REASONS FOR THE NEW BIRTH (3:5-6; Eze.36:25-27)

(John 3:5-6) Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

(Ezek 36:25-29) Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. 26A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

27And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. 28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

29 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: …

Two Basic Needs of Every Person Born of Man

1. Sinfulness of the Flesh (Rom. 3:10, 23)

(Titus 3:5) Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

(1 Peter 1:22-23) Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

2. Deadness of the Spirit

(Eph 2:1,5) And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;….5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

II. THE MYSTERY OF THE NEW BIRTH (3:4,7-9)

III. THE REQUIREMENT OF THE NEW BIRTH (3:14-21)

1. Believe Your Need of a New Birth

- Admit Your Need of a Savior

2. Believe Christ Alone Made Provision for the

New Birth

(John 3:13-15) And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

(Num 21:7-9) Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. 9 And Moses -had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

IV. THE BLESSINGS OF THE NEW BIRTH

1. See/Experience the Family/Kingdom of God

2. Born into the Family of God (Born from Above)

3. Born with the Spirit of God (Born Again)

Become a Citizen of the Kingdom of God

4. Delivered from the Consequences of Your Sin

No Longer Separated from a Holy God

No Longer Under the Penalty of Sin

“Will not Perish but have everlasting Life
