“Stand in awe of God!”

Ecclesiastes Pt 6

Opening Illustration: What happens in 30 minutes?

Have a timer with on the pulpit – set it for 30 minutes in front of everyone. The lesson from the timer is what motivated Solomon to write the book of Ecclesiastes because time was running out for him and for many others. It made him think about eternity and where he was going. The lesson from the timer is this for us today:

* 5 people died of aids in the US in the last 30 minutes.

* 18 people in the US died from injuries in the last 30 minutes.

* 2 people in the US committed suicide in the last 30 minutes.

* 4 people died of a heart attack in the US in the last 30 minutes.

“Mission Maker Magazine”, page 18, Edition 2008, (www.WorldChristianDatabase.org).

*7,764 souls began life in the world in the last 30 minutes

*3,444 souls meet Jesus face-to-face in the world in the last 30 minutes

*3,420 baptisms occurred in foreign mission in the world in the last 30 minutes

*$1,311,888 dollars were given to foreign missions in the world in the last 30 minutes

*10,896 people migrated internationally in the world in the last 30 minutes

*402 children became homeless or family-less in the world in the last 30 minutes

*2,275 rural poor migrated to cities in the world in the last 30 minutes

*1,140 people moved into urban slums in the world in the last 30 minutes

*68 people began supporting themselves only by collecting garbage in the world in the last 30 minutes

*1,375 children under age five died from preventable starvation related causes in the world in the last 30 minutes

*10 Christians died for their faith witness in the last 30 minutes

(A fter 30 minutes) - When the timer goes off share again how many people have died in that time frame and ask them to think about how many people have lived useless – meaningless lives! They wasted their time and have nothing to show for their lifetime. How many senseless deaths have occurred in the last 30 minutes across the world? Why so many senseless deaths? Because people live self-centered lives and the focus is all about themselves rather than others and if we live like this then there is no eternal value found in these lifetimes.

Opening Video Illustration: Teaching Moments Volume 4 - “An overview of God’s World.” Blue Fish - This is a fast paced tour around the world which reveals overwhelming physical and spiritual needs.

Our world is filled with needs and it is up to us to decide to make a difference in it. The truth is how we choose to live our life and how we choose to worship and serve God will impact people or not. The choices we make with our finances will determine if our life will make a difference for eternity and actually count for something.

Scripture Text: Ecc. Chapter 5

1Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.

2 Do not be quick with your mouth,

do not be hasty in your heart

to utter anything before God.

God is in heaven

and you are on earth,

so let your words be few.

3 As a dream comes when there are many cares,

so the speech of a fool when there are many words.

4When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. 5It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it. 6Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands? 7Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore stand in awe of God.

8If you see the poor oppressed in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still. 9The increase from the land is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.

10 Whoever loves money never has money enough;

whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.

This too is meaningless.

11 As goods increase,

so do those who consume them.

And what benefit are they to the owner

except to feast his eyes on them?

12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet,

whether he eats little or much,

but the abundance of a rich man

permits him no sleep.

13I have seen a grievous evil under the sun:

wealth hoarded to the harm of its owner,

14 or wealth lost through some misfortune,

so that when he has a son

there is nothing left for him.

15 Naked a man comes from his mother’s womb,

and as he comes, so he departs.

He takes nothing from his labor

that he can carry in his hand.

16This too is a grievous evil:

As a man comes, so he departs,

and what does he gain,

since he toils for the wind?

17 All his days he eats in darkness,

with great frustration, affliction and anger.

18Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him—for this is his lot. 19Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work—this is a gift of God. 20He seldom reflects on the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with gladness of heart.

Thesis: The believer must come to church with a sense of awe for God and listen to what the Spirit is saying about broken vows and the misuse of money. If we fail to invite God into our lives then we will live a meaningless life and that life will be a life of misery.

Introduction:

Solomon has taken another walk through his kingdom and this time he walks through the Temple observing the people of Israel worshipping God. He see’s people worshipping God and there hypocritical position with God. They think God accepts their sacrifice because of their many words but yet they live a life that has no eternal value. Solomon calls them fools because they are clueless to their sinful condition. They think words speak louder than actions from the heart. They actually think they are fooling God about their hearts condition. But they are not and Solomon rebukes them and tells them that all their words are meaningless if there is no righteous action’s in their lives. He tells them that they should stand in awe of God and not try to make a fool of Him. He tells them to guard their steps and their mouths in the house of God. He really in my understanding tells them to put their vows, and their money into action for God and to quit talking about it because talk means nothing to God. The truth is he has heard it all before and God wants us to live our faith not just talk about living it. We need to take a risk for God and put our faith into action for the Kingdom of God. We need to walk the walk and forget about all the Christian talk. I remember one minister saying, “I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day!”

Illustration from “Shindler’s List”

Oskar Shindler saved 1,000 of lives by his sacrifice of Finances, Time and Resources. The descendents of the Shindler Jews is well over 6,000 today as a result of his commitment to save those condemned to die. Shindler made a choice to live his life for God. He chose to “Love his neighbor as himself.” He chose to make a eternal difference with his life and he sacrificed his time, his money and his resources for others. This sacrifice lives on today in many lives and it lives on in eternity.

Illustration: Objects on Stage and in the Power Point slide: Clock = Time, Money = Finances, Family and a Car = Resources – I believe in a principle I will call 10 - 3rd power. The Clock represents our time and parallels to the one who actually gave us all the gift of time – His name God the Father. The second object is money, which represents Jesus Christ the one who gave the biggest sacrifice for you and me. He gave his precious costly life and what price tag can you put on a person’s life? The third items are a family, a car, a house and they represent resources that we possess and this parallels what the Holy Spirit gives to us each and every day which is God’s resources. So the thought here is we must be willing to offer our lives to God literally.

For those who recall your math 10 to the 3rd power is not 10+10+10=30. It is 10x10x10=1000. I believe we need to give 10%of our time to God, 10% of our finances to Christ, and 10% of our resources to the Holy Spirit. Why because when we give 10% then God takes it and multiplies its value and this value is credited to us for eternity.

Solomon is trying to communicate to us the importance of living life for God and not for ourselves. He emphasizes this so that we will learn to worship God the right way so we can in turn reap and eternal reward. Solomon wants our lives to count for eternity and to have eternal value.

Remember to understand what Solomon is saying we have to read the last few verses of this book to put everything else into context:

Ecclesiastes 12: 13, 14:

13 Now all has been heard;

here is the conclusion of the matter:

Fear God and keep his commandments,

for this is the whole duty of man.

14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,

including every hidden thing,

whether it is good or evil.

T.S. - Solomon challenges us to make sure that we put our words into action. Why? Because God does not like liars.

I. To vow or not to vow? (This is one of the questions in our chapter?)

a. The question is raised as to whether we should make a vow to God.

i. Solomon says don’t do it loosely! Be very careful!

ii. Solomon says, “If you make a promise to God then you had better do it because He does not like liars!

1. Liars will not be blessed by God, lies will cost you!

2. God will not be pleased and it’s not a good idea to lie to God because He always knows the truth.

b. Solomon observed the way many people where coming to the Temple to worship and he saw a lack of awe for God. He saw people coming to worship God but they had no clue that they were living in sin. Solomon tells them to stop what they are doing and listen. He cautions people about making a vow or a commitment to God loosely. He warns them that God will hold them responsible for what a person vows to do for Him.

i. We need to walk the walk and forget the idol talk!

ii. It’s time for the Christian to put their words in actions.

iii. I want to pause here for a moment and I want you to take a few moments in time – and see if you have broken a promise you have made to God. Be honest with yourselves this morning.

1. Play a song so people can here from the Spirit!

c. You may be thinking: “How have people broken their vows to God?”

i. Marriage vows – many people have broken their marriage vows to God and to others in the sight of God.

ii. Dedication of children to God vows – many have dedicated their kids to God and then failed to raise their kids in a Biblical manner.

iii. Salvation vows – people have accepted Jesus to be Lord of their Lives and then refused after time to serve God with their whole hearts. They vowed to do things God’s way and then refused to live that way.

iv. Giving vows – people have committed to membership of this church and to God to tithe and yet they don’t tithe. People have made promises to give to God what is His and yet don’t do it. People have made financial pledges and failed to keep them.

v. Other promises to God – How about those moments in time when people are in tough position and promise to do something for God and then when they are delivered they don’t do it!

1. Why do people do this? Because they do take God seriously because they do not have a holy awe for God.

d. Solomon tells us to watch what we say to God. We are not to be hasty with our mouth to God.

i. He warns about saying to many hollow words to God. In other words promising God that you will do this for Him and that for Him and then never doing it.

ii. He warns a person that if they make a pledge to God then they need to fulfill that pledge as soon as possible because God does not care for liars.

1. 1 John 2:4-6: 4The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

2. Psalm 63:11: But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by God’s name will praise him, while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

3. Rev. 3:7-10: 7“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 8I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. 10Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth.

4. There are many more verses I could quote but I think you are getting the point!

e. We really need to be careful what we say to God and we need to have holy fear and a holy awe for Him.

i. Remember: He created you for a purpose and that is not to lie.

ii. Remember: He created you and He can and will determine your eternal destiny one day!

f. Josh Holloway states, “Many times when we go before the Lord, we offer up bits and pieces of our lives to Him in return for something. Much more often than not, these are selfish things we try to bargain with God about. Here we are reminded that prayer is not all about us doing the talking – we should be still and listen to God’s voice as well. Speak wisely, because God can see everything and He knows the truth before we even begin to make our excuse for failure.”

g. I find it interesting that Solomon is talking about promises and pledges to God and warns us not to break them and then he leads into the subject of money.

T.S. – Solomon tells us to put our words into deeds for God and then he also says “Put your money where your mouth is!”

II. To love money or not to love money?

a. Solomon addresses the subject of money in connection with worship to God. He makes the following observations about money and wealth – I think after observing people’s life at the Temple worship services.

i. “He who loves money never has enough!”

ii. “Whoever loves wealth will never be satisfied!”

iii. “When wealth is hoarded it harms the owner!”

1. Solomon hit the nail right on the head – he says if you are living for money and not for God you are in for a big disappointment!

b. In the New Testament we are warned repeatedly that the love of money is the root of all evil! Listen to some of these verses:

i. I Timothy 6:6-12 (NIV): 6But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many grief’s. 11But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1. I Timothy 6:6-12 (The Message): A devout life does bring wealth, but it’s the rich simplicity of being yourself before God. Since we entered the world penniless and will leave it penniless, if we have bread on the table and shoes on our feet, that’s enough. But if it’s only money these leaders are after, they’ll self-destruct in no time. Lust for money brings trouble and nothing but trouble. Going down that path, some lose their footing in the faith completely and live to regret it bitterly ever after.

ii. Hebrews 13:5 (The Message): Don’t be obsessed with getting more material things. Be relaxed with what you have. Since God assured us, “I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,” we can boldly quote, “God is there, ready to help; I’m fearless no matter what. Who or what can get to me?”

c. Solomon tells the “God worshipper - to put their money where their mouth is.”

i. You claim to love God and worship God with your mouth but does this reverence and awe for God affect your check book?

1. Does your love and awe for God affect the way you spend your money?

2. Does your love and awe for God affect your giving at the temple – at the house of God?

3. Does your love and awe of God make you want to give God what belongs to God?

ii. Listen to some recent statistics on how Christians are breaking their vows to God by robbing from Him:

1. George Barna reports that giving to churches dropped significantly last year. In 2000, 70% of Christians gave to the church, compared to 84% in 1999.

2. Barna’s survey also showed that while 32% of Christians claimed to have tithed, a check of the household income showed that only 12% actually did.

a. In other words they lied in the poll! I wonder why they lied?

3. The average Christian only gives 2.5% of their income to the Lord.

a. Yet they spend 2x more on entertainment than on God’s work.

4. 23% of Christians interviewed in a poll said they bought a lottery ticket once a week.

a. People place more faith in lottery tickets than in God.

i. Roger Babson states:

1. $1.00 spent for lunch last five hours.

2. $1.00 spent for necktie last five weeks.

3. $1.00 spent for a cap last five months.

4. $1.00 spent for an auto last five years.

5. $1.00 spent for railroad lasts five decades.

6. $1.00 spent in God’s service lasts for eternity.

5. It is obvious from these statistics that people are breaking their promises to God.

d. In my many years as a minister of the Gospel I have heard many excuses why someone thinks they are exempt from giving to God what belongs to Him. Here are just a few excuses:

i. Excuse: “The church does not need me to give, besides I deserve all that I have.”

1. God’s response II Corinthians 8:7 7But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

2. The truth is the church needs you to give so that the ministry will continue.

3. Why do you think that you are not obligated to pay you God bill so that the ministry can reach more people for the Kingdom?

4. This excuse is a self-centered excuse not a God-centered attitude.

ii. Excuse: “Tithing and giving is an Old Testament idea and not for today!”

1. Malachi 3:6-18: 6“I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. 7Ever since the time of your forefathers you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD Almighty. “But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’ 8“Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ “In tithes and offerings. 9You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me. 10Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 11I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,” says the LORD Almighty. 12“Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the LORD Almighty.13“You have said harsh things against me,” says the LORD.“Yet you ask, ‘What have we said against you?’ 14“You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What did we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD Almighty? 15But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly the evildoers prosper, and even those who challenge God escape.’ 16Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name. 17“They will be mine,” says the LORD Almighty, “in the day when I make up my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him. 18And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.

2. This verse says that God has not changed his mind on giving and tithing.

a. If you go with this argument then the Old Testament has no eternal value in it. Then the 10 Commandments are worthless today you are saying they are out of date!

3. Hebrews 7:1-9 is shared in the New Testament to stress the worship of tithing to the priest of the Host High God Melchizedek who if you do your research turns out to be Jesus.

a. Listen to the text: 1This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, his name means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever.4Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! 5Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, their brothers—even though their brothers are descended from Abraham. 6This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7And without doubt the lesser person is blessed by the greater. 8In the one case, the tenth is collected by men who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living. 9One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham.

b. The spiritual lesson here is we all need to tithe to the Great High Priest who is Jesus!

iii. Excuse: “But God I did not know I was suppose to tithe and give offerings!”

1. Here is the bad news for you today now you know:

2. But here is little nudge of faith by our leadership at New Life: If you have never tithed before and you make a vow to do so to God over the next 3 months and you feel God has not blessed you then we will give you back all your money!

iv. Excuse: “It does not apply to me because I can’t afford to give. I will impoverish my family if I do.”

1. Jesus’ response to this attitude is found in Luke.

a. Luke 21:2 1As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3“I tell you the truth,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

2. Coffey states, “The Bible teaches the opposite (To this statement above). This is one of the great benefits of Christian financial management. It puts one in the position to be a generous giver. The Bible says in 2 Cor. 9 “Remember this, whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, but who - sows generously will also receive generously.”

3. You cannot afford not to tithe! You cannot afford not to give your time! You cannot afford to not give of your resources. The Lord expects all of us to tithe and to give offerings to the work of the Kingdom of God.

e. Many have not learned the truth about eternity – you will not take money with you into Heaven you will take only the things you did in this life that had eternal value with you – that’s it!

i. Giving gives your money eternal value-that will live on into eternity!

1. Trust me you will be judged by how you spent your money at the Judgment Seat of Christ!

ii. We came to this earth naked and with our spiritual DNA purpose and when we return to the Lord He will evaluate our lives to see if we fulfilled our destiny. And money will be a part of the test!

1. How we manage our money and our things will determine whether we stand in awe of God or not.

iii. Solomon says the person who lives for himself takes nothing with Him and his toil – his life is meaningless if he just lived it for himself. If a person only spent their money on themselves then they have spent their money in meaningless worthless way.

1. A person who does not have God in his life lives with turmoil, great frustration, affliction and anger.

2. They may have money but they will never enjoy life without a right relationship with God.

f. A person who has wealth, joy, happiness and loves his work should stand in awe of God because he has a great gift from God.

i. Give:

1. G – God

2. I – in

3. V – view

4. E – eternity in the heart!

Illustration: The Offering plate for Blue Fish TV – Who could have ever imagined that this act of worship could cause so much internal emotion?

T.S. – We need to put our money where our mouth is. We are to honor God and be in awe of Him and we show this reverence by giving to Him and His work as directed by the Scriptures. If we really have a holy awe of God we will show it with our management of money, our promises and with our lives.

III. To stand in awe of God or to not stand in awe of God?

a. Solomon tells us to stand in awe of God verse 7b

i. Listen to these other texts from the Bible on the importance of standing in awe of God

1. Malachi 2:1-9: 1“And now this admonition is for you, O priests. 2If you do not listen, and if you do not set your heart to honor my name,” says the LORD Almighty, “I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not set your heart to honor me.3“Because of you I will rebuke your descendants; I will spread on your faces the offal from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it. 4And you will know that I have sent you this admonition so that my covenant with Levi may continue,” says the LORD Almighty. 5“My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. 6True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin. 7“For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, and from his mouth men should seek instruction—because he is the messenger of the LORD Almighty. 8But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,” says the LORD Almighty. 9“So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.”

2. Job 25:2: “Dominion and awe belong to God; he establishes order in the heights of heaven.

3. Isa 29:23: When they see among them their children, the work of my hands, they will keep my name holy; they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One of Jacob, and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.

4. Jer. 2:19: Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God and have no awe of me,” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.

5. Mt. 9:8: When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.

6. Acts 2:43: Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.

7. Heb 12:28, 29: 28Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29for our “God is a consuming fire.”

b. Definition of awe from brainy and Webster’s Dictionaries:

i. 1. an overwhelming feeling of wonder or admiration; 2: an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime 3. archaic a: dread, terror b: the power to inspire dread

ii. An Amazing Definition of Awe: This month at CWL we are preaching on “Jesus is not Your Homeboy: The Fear of the Lord”. The Fear of the Lord is not being afraid of God, but having a deep awe, reverence and respect for him. A member pointed me to an amazing definition of awe - it is a mixed emotion of reverence, respect, dread, and wonder inspired by authority, genius, great beauty, sublimity, or might. (www.dictionary.com) from http://brendanwitton.wordpress.com/2007/10/17/an-amazing-definition-of-awe/

c. Many have started to take God’s presence and His holy being to casually and I see a real lack of respect and awe for God today.

i. Reference the lack of respect given to God today and His Word.

ii. It’s time the church moves back into having a holy reverence and a holy awe for the Lord! He deserves it!

Conclusion:

Summary of the 3 points today:

• The Christian’s must keep their promises to God.

• The Christian must give to God what belongs to God or it will harm them.

• The Christian must stand in awe of God on a daily basis.
