Summary: Training your heart to believe is an unlearning and relearning process. We have to train our heart to believe by learning not to believe what unbelievers believe.

THE SIN, RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND JUDGMENT SERIES (part 3)

“Training Your Heart to Believe on Jesus”

SERIES TEXT - John 16:7-8

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;

SERMON TEXT - Psalm 1:1-2

1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

Verse 1 lists things that discourage the believer’s belief system

1. Don’t Listen to What Unbelievers Believe (Don’t walk in the counsel of the ungodly) – You can’t learn how or what to believe from unbelievers. Unbelievers will not tell you what God says. Unbelievers will tell you what they say. They say you can’t… They say you don’t… They say God can’t… They say God won’t… The bible calls people the say what “they” say naysayers. We just call them “Them”.

Hebrews 4:1-2 (King James Version)

1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

The Word does not work unless you mix it with Faith. We walk by faith, talk by faith, live by faith and give by faith.

We cannot let unbelievers tell us what to believe because living the Christian life is impossible if we don‘t believe.

2. Don’t Do What Unbelievers Do (Don’t stand in the way of sinners) - The saying is “getting it out of your system”. The problem is you don’t get something out of your system by doing it. You put something into your system by doing it. You are training your heart to sin. If you are training your heart to sin then you are not training your heart to believe.

Psalm 19:12-14

12Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

13Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

Secret faults are called iniquity. Iniquity is the secrets sin that lies within. It’s the lust, the hatred, the bitterness, or the envy that no one but God and me knows about. Iniquity becomes presumptuous sin, presumptuous sin becomes transgression, transgression becomes behavior, behavior becomes a habit, a habit becomes a vice, a vice becomes Satan’s device the he uses to push you back from faith to fear, from fear to doubt, from doubt to unbelief, from unbelief to disobedience, from disobedience to rebellion and rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft. The devil has complete control of you to make you do things you know you wouldn’t do if you were training your heart to believe.

3. Don’t Hang Around Haters (Don’t’ sit in the seat of the scornful) – You can’t share your vision, your dreams, your goals, or your plans with everyone. There are people that want nothing out of life and want you to have nothing too. There are people that are OK with you having something as long as they feel like you have less than them. Don’t hang around haters!

4. Open the Book to Learn to Believe What Believers Believe.

Psalms 1:2

2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

You have to open up the book and find the place where it is written about you and believe what God has written about you.
