Summary: They say timing is everything. With God, it is also perfect, as demonstrated in Daniel’s vision.

God’s Perfect Timing

Text: Daniel 2:19-49

The Introduction

Cathy Mullikin’s bird is cooked, and her calendar is toast.

Mullikin had her Thanksgiving turkey dinner already cooked on Thursday, “and my friends and family are coming on the 28th and they’re going to think I’m a kook,” she said.

She should never have believed that free calendar. Jackson-Madison County General Hospital gave out 40,000 of them last year and every last one said Thanksgiving was on the 21st instead of the 28th.

We are prisoners of time:

o 24 hours in a day to work, eat, sleep and get things done

o Every minute ticks by beyond our control

o We cannot stop aging

o We cannot stop progress

o There are days allotted for us and that is it (Eccles. 3:1)

o The control of time is not ours, only what we do with it.

The events in our life are controlled by a gracious and omnipotent God

Sometimes, we cannot see his working or timing but we trust it is there

Daniel was trusting God for His timing in the revelation of a dream that would save His life.

I don’t imagine that Daniel even broke a sweat waiting for God to disclose what he needed to know.

Transition Statement: Let’s take a look at the picture of God’s timing to understand this story and than we will see the purpose of God’s timing.

Transition Statement: Now that we understand the big picture in Daniel’s dilemma we need to quickly look at the purpose of God’s timing to apply it to ourselves. This will help us when we don’t always see his hand at work but we can trust His heart that it will come out right.

2. The Purpose of God’s Timing

A. To Reveal His Person

i. His interest in the activities of men

ii. His preservation of His children

iii. His responsiveness to prayer

iv. God is interested in us and what goes on around us

B. To Perfect our Patience

i. Patience is a virtue, possess it if you can. Found seldom in a woman, never in a man.

ii. We are an impatient people

iii. Colossians 1:10-11 - 10That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

iv. We are not patient when it comes to God’s working

C. To Demonstrate His Power

i. The wise men of Babylon did not have power to interpret

ii. Daniel did not even have power except for God giving it to him (30)

iii. Nebuchadnezzer was at a loss to know his dream

iv. He could not even execute the wise men of Babylon without God’s consent

v. We need that reminder in our lives as well (sickness, loss, trials) to remember that we are not the end of all things. – Isaiah 46:9-11 - 9Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, 10Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: 11Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

D. To Accomplish His Purpose

i. He wanted Daniel promoted (God’s representative) – 21 and 48

ii. He wanted Nebuchadnezzer to know who was really in charge – 47

iii. God’s purpose is not always our purpose and His purpose supersedes ours.

iv. Psalms 116:2 - Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.

v. It also shows that God does answer the prayers of His children so He can be glorified

Conclusion:

Do you get impatient with God?

Do you trust His timing?
