Summary: Angels - what the bible says about them as opposed to the world. Long list of Scriptures about angels included.

An angel appeared at a faculty meeting and told the dean that in return for his unselfish service, he will be rewarded with his choice of wealth, wisdom, or beauty. Without hesitating, the dean selects wisdom.

"It is done!" the angel said, and then disappeared into a cloud of smoke.

All of the other members of the faculty stared at the dean with amazement.

Finally one of them whispered, "Now that you have infinite wisdom, Dean, say something."

The Dean looked them and said, "I should have taken the money."

We have been looking at some of the favorite Christmas hymns this Advent Season and today we are taking our start from “Angels From The Realms Of Glory”. We are going to take a closer look at who angels are and what we biblically know about angels with this hymn as our starting point. This morning we will be looking at a larger number of Scripture references today than we usually do and so for those of you who take notes on the sermons and may not be able to catch all the references, no worries, I will post the sermon in a couple of days at out church website. I will post all the scriptures where the words angel or angels occurs in the entire bible as well.

If you have your hymnals open this morning, a quick look at #174, “Angels From The Realms Of Glory”, shows that the hymn starts with the Christmas story when the angels appear to the shepherds…but you’ll notice that it very quickly moves to Jesus second coming, “descending in his temple he shall appear” and the last verse ends with all people of all time bowing in worship to Jesus Christ. Remember, we have seen over the past year that when “every knee shall bow” before Jesus Christ at the end of time – some will freely acknowledge Jesus as Lord, whereas others will be forced against their will, to bow in acknowledgment that Jesus as Lord. All the world’s population of all time will gather before Jesus Christ, who will enforce his dominion over all creation at the end of time.

See, this hymn starts with the image of an insignificant few worshiping the vulnerable infant Jesus Christ but ends with the image of the all powerful, dominating God, in the person of Jesus Christ. Christmas is about Jesus coming to save us, but least we should forget – this is God, who we are to serve, who we are to worship, who we are to obey.

This hymn “Angels From The Realms Of Glory” relates to us the angels announcing Jesus’ birth. Let’s stop there for a moment. We have heard the Christmas story so many times, it seems just an obvious part of the story that angels announce the birth of Jesus. We don’t give it a second thought that angels announce the birth of Jesus.

So, I ask you, who else has had angels announce their birth?

Angels. What in the world are they doing at the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem?

Polls and surveys tell us that a majority of people believe that angels exist….but the angels they believe in may have more to do with fiction than reality. For example, it turns out there are a large number of people in Los Angeles who believe in parking angels. These apparently are angels who help people find a parking place.

To some degree it makes sense that people would believe such a wacky thing, movies tend to show angels as some type of a genies who grant wishes or favors, like in our opening joke. Movies show angels help baseball teams obtain a winning season, or they show how angels are always trying to earn their wings and movies tend to insinuate that angels are not usually too socially aware.

Angels are very popular today, in fact there are whole stores filled with nothing but angel merchandise. One family has a store in California full of everything angel in dedication to their deceased daughter, who they believe is now an angel. They started the store hoping all the angel merchandise displayed in one central location would somehow reach out to their daughter…..belief in angels is not new, in the ancient Mediterranean world, Hebrews, Egyptians, Greeks and Phoenicians strongly believed in angels. In the ancient world there were a variety of cults that worshiped angels. Some in the early church even turned away from worship of Jesus Christ and embraced worship of angels.

The Bible is far from silent on angels. We see that angels are mentioned some 273 times in the Bible. They are prominent in both the old and the new testament. The Scriptures do not tell us every detail about angels, but we can get a good picture of who angels are.

We don’t always have a clear picture of who angels are, even if we are Christians. Sometimes when I am at a funeral I will hear someone in an attempt to be comforting say something like, “she is now an angel in heaven”. Let me assure you, when you die, you will not become an angel. You are an individual, you will always be you, you will not change into something else, you, nor anyone else for that matter will become an angel.

Angels are created beings. (Neh 9:6; John 1:1-3; Eph 3:9;) They are a direct creation from God. Col. 1:16 “For by him (that’s Jesus Christ) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.” “Thrones or powers or rulers or authorities”, is a reference not to earthly political institutions, but to spiritual rankings, in other words tiers of power filled by angelic beings. God created the angels an their rankings.

The number of angels is fixed as we never see any mention of more being created. God created the angels, and boom, there they are. Angels are a company. We as humans are a race. A company is static a race reproduces. The human race reproduces, more and more humans are continually created; A company of angels do not reproduce, they are created once, and that’s it. This is why Jesus says in Matt. 22:30 “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” So angels are genderless, they are not male nor female in the human sense, however, whenever they are referred to in Scripture they are always referred to in the masculine.

They were created prior to the creation of the world (Job 38:1,4,7) and their numbers are associated with the stars, which means they may be in the billions or trillions. All this talk about angels in training or angels working for their wings makes no sense since there are never any new angels, and they have existed for quite some time. We also see that angels cannot die, Luke 20:36 “and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels.”

Angels are created, humans do not become angels, angels are a fixed number, angels are genderless, there are a very large number of angels and they have been around the block quite a few times.

Angels generally operate unseen to the human eye as they are spiritual beings - and while Jesus himself tells us that spiritual beings to not possess flesh and bone (Luke 24:39) we see in, 1Cor. 15:40 “There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another.” So it seems that angels have some sort of body, but the type of body they have is, for the lack of a better word, alien to us. Remember, after Jesus’ resurrection he had a body, it was a very real body, but somehow Jesus’ body was transformed into a different kind of body. Perhaps Jesus’ post resurrection body is the closest type of body to an angelic body. What is known is that the type of body they have is so different, we cannot comprehend it.

We do see angels appear quite often in Scripture. In the book of Genesis alone, angels appear to Hagar (Gen 16), Lot (Gen 19), Abraham (Gen 22), and Jacob (Gen 31). Sometimes, as with Lot, angels appear to be very human like and other times as with the prophet Balaam in Numbers 22, an angel appears to be anything but human. We are told in Heb. 13:2 “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” This give us the indication that angels either appear in human form or are able to blind humans to who they really are. Though angels are powerful, they are not all powerful and cannot be in more than one place at a time. (Dan 10:12)

Angels are spiritual beings, but the have some sort of a body that we perhaps cannot comprehend. Sometimes they appear to be human and sometimes they appear to be very other worldly. All that said, we see several different types of angels in Scripture. What is described to us may not be exhaustive, but Scripture reveals to us a number of things.

First they are organized in some kind of a hierarchical order: Principalities, powers, thrones, authorities, dominions and might. (Eph 1:21, 3:10; Col 1:16, 2:10; 1Pet 3:22) Exactly what these categories mean, is impossible to distinguish, but what can be ascertained is that there are various levels of ruling positions assigned to angels.

Scripture does, however, specifically describe four kinds of angels: the archangel, the cherubim angel, the seraphim angel, the living creature. The archangel is probably the one angel we are most familiar with. Archangels are the highest ranking angels. We are told of two archangels in Scripture: Michael, which means “Who is like God” appears in Isaiah 14, Daniel 12, Jude 9, and Revelation 12. Michael appears to be fighting evil forces. From the references with Michael alone we se that there is some sort of spiritual warfare that we humans are unaware of. Michael assists Daniel, protects Israel and disputes and fights with Satan.

The second archangel we see is Gabriel, which means, “The mighty one of God” he appears quite often in Scripture. He explains prophecy to Daniel, visits Mary, announces Jesus’ birth to the shepherds, rolls back the stone of Jesus tomb, reassures Paul, will sound the trumpet at the rapture and many, many other things, though he is not seen finding parking spaces at the mall.

Gabriel Scriptures: (Dan 8:16; Luke 1:19, 26, 2:9, 22:43; Matt 1:20, 2:13, 19, 28:2; Acts 5:19, 8:26, 10:3, 12:23; 27:23; 1Thess 4:16)

Next we have the Cherubim. These are the next most powerful type of angel (Gen 3:24; Ex 25:18-20; Ezek 1:4-28, 10:1-22) These angels are described as having four faces: one of a man, one of a lion, one of an ox, and one of an eagle. They are described as having two pair of wings and two pair of hands. This type of angel is described in Gen 3:24 as guarding the tree of life in the garden of Eden. These are the angelic figures that are placed on top of the ark of the covenant at God’s command. (remember Indiana Jones) These are the angels who appear to Ezekiel at the throne of God. Prior to his fall, Satan, then known as Lucifer, was the chief cherub angel. We’ll talk about him a bit later. *

Then we have the Seraphim, which means “the burning ones”. They are only mentioned once in the bible, in Isaiah 6:1-7. They are described as having six wings and singing in chorus to God, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory” This is the kind of angel that presses a hot coal to the lips of Isaiah to purge his sin.

Finally there is the Living Creature. (Rev 4:6-9, 5:8, 6:1,3,5,7) There number may be as limited to four as they only appear in a group of four. They have the four faces of the Cherubim and the six wings of the Seraphim. It is thought that they have taken the place of Lucifer at the throne of God. These angels worship God endlessly.

The four faces we see on each of these angels appears to correspond to the four gospels found in the Bible which present Jesus four fold: First as the lion of Judah (Matthew); Then the lowly ox, (Mark); The prefect human, (Luke), and the mighty God like eagle (John).

There may be other kinds of angels, but this is what we find described to us in Scripture.

The biblical description of these angels is not at all what we see on top of a Christmas tree, is t? However, many times angels are described as looking like humans looking as seen in Mark 16:5 when an angel is described as a young man by those who enter the empty tomb of Jesus.

What about guardian angels? Well, the bible does not specifically state whether there are guardian angels or not, yet in Heb. 1:14, we read, “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” And also in Matthew 18:10 Jesus says, “See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” So guardian angels are a logical possibility, but the concept of guardian angels is not specifically stated in the bible.

Angels are imposing figures. They are superior to humans, because of the fall of humanity through Adam; They are stronger, smarter, faster (2 peter 2:11) but inferior to God. They may be inferior to God, but they are very powerful.

Are all angels faithful? No, there are Evil angels, they are demons, which is simply another title for fallen angels. Lucifer, who was the Chief Cherub wanted to be like God and attempted to overtake God and one third of the angels followed him. Angels who are faithful to God are not able to sin – But demons, that is, fallen angels, are not able not to sin. The subject of fallen angels is a very large and extended, and the subject of the occult doesn’t fit for us this morning. But suffice it to say that all angels are not faithful to God and have their own agenda unrelated to God. Perhaps some folks who claim to have had a spiritual experience have not had a godly spiritual experience….

What do angels do? In the presence of God they worship God (1 Kings 22:19; Psalms 29:1, 2; Isaiah 6:3; Rev 4:8, 19:4); Inquire of God about his plan(Dan 12:5-6); Perform the will of God (Dan 7:10; Gen 28:12; Psalm 103:29, 104:4); Rejoice in the works of God (Job 38:7; 1 Tim 3:16; Rev 5:11-12) and execute and see the wrath of God (Rev 14:10) as we see in our Scripture this morning Matt 13:44-52. Angels are not harmless. They are to carry out the will of God whether it is blessing or wrath.

Here on earth we see angels informing, instructing the Word of God to believers (Dan 7:16; Zech 1:9,13-14,19; Luke 1:26-33, 24:4-7; Acts 1:10-11 – to name just a few). They protect believers (Ps 34:7; Gen 19:10-11) They comfort as they did to Elijah (1 Kings 19:5); They deliver as they did with Peter out of prison (acts 5:19); They minister at the moment of death (Luke 16:22). I have heard many stories of people experiencing angels on their death bed, but we rely on Scripture for our information, and Luke 16:22 seems to agree that angels are there at the death of a believer.

To those who are not saved….all the references for angels and unbelievers are in the form of judgment and wrath. (See attached angel scriptures, this is very extensive)

In our passage this morning we see that the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. Hidden in field – something of great worth can be hidden right in front of our eyes, we may pass it everyday as travelers pass a buried treasure in a field. The treasure this there, but it cannot be perceived. Like this parable of the kingdom of God being hidden, so it is with angels. We may believe in angels….to some degree, but since we are unable to see angels, they really have no meaning to us, and we may in fact look at what is presented in Scripture about angels as lore, legend, myth or simply ancient people attempting to describe the spiritual.

However, reading Matt 13:47-50 should take us back a bit from such belief. Matt. 13:47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Angels are not our fluffy friends genies that are sent to grant wishes. Nor are they simpletons who are awarded wings whenever a bell rings. No, they are very powerful beings that are quite a bit other worldly and though they may simply proclaim a birth over 2000 years ago, and though they may also assist believers, they also enforce the wrath of God, the judgment of Jesus upon humanity.

For though Jesus comes as a helpless infant with the angels announcement, we see them reinforcing the fact that we are to look to Jesus Christ in His fullness as the almighty God.

1Cor. 4:9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like men condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men.

1Cor. 6:3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

1Cor. 10:10 And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.

1Cor. 11:10 For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.

Rev. 5:11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.

Rev. 7:1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. 2 Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea:

Rev. 7:11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,

Rev. 8:2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.

Rev. 8:3 Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. 4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel’s hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

Rev. 8:6 Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.

Rev. 8:7 The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down upon the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

Rev. 8:8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood,

Rev. 9:1 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss.

Rev. 9:11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.

Rev. 9:13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the horns of the golden altar that is before God. 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind.

Rev. 10:1 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars.

Rev. 10:5 Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven.

Rev. 10:7 But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”

Rev. 10:8 Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”

Rev. 10:9 So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.” 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour.

He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.

Rev. 14:15 Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.”

Rev. 14:17 Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” 19 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath.

Rev. 15:1 I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign: seven angels with the seven last plagues—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed.

Rev. 15:6 Out of the temple came the seven angels with the seven plagues. They were dressed in clean, shining linen and wore golden sashes around their chests. 7 Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls filled with the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever. 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

Rev. 16:1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.”

Rev. 16:2 The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land, and ugly and painful sores broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped his image.

Rev. 16:3 The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead man, and every living thing in the sea died.

Rev. 16:4 The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood. 5 Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say:

“You are just in these judgments,

you who are and who were, the Holy One,

because you have so judged;

Rev. 17:7 Then the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns.

Rev. 17:15 Then the angel said to me, “The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.

Rev. 18:1 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.

“With such violence

the great city of Babylon will be thrown down,

Rev. 21:12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Rev. 21:15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls.

Rev. 21:17 He measured its wall and it was 144 cubits thick, by man’s measurement, which the angel was using.
