John 5:39-- TYPES OF JESUS CHRIST IN THE O.T. 1-10-09

Today I want to talk just for a little while on some of the many {types} of Jesus Christ that we see in the O.T.

First of all let me say that there are various people, & sacrificial offerings as well as such things as, Manna, & The Temple, & Foundation stones and cornerstones, and also Jacob’s ladder, as well as many other things that are typical and pictures of the Lord Jesus.

Our text verse say’s:

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

So today Lord willing I’ll try and point out a few of these Types.

Noah’s Ark is a real good picture of the Lord Jesus. Noah’s ark is an early type of Christ. The people of Noah’s time were condemned to death by their sin. But God found faith and righteousness in Noah and therefore provided him and his family with a way of salvation from the coming flood: the ark.

And God has also made a WAY of salvation from the wrath to come in the safety of the ARK of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

Noah believed God and by faith built the ark, and when the flood came, he and his family took refuge in the ark and were spared death.

Hebrews 11: 7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house --

Because of his faith, Noah was rewarded and saved.

God said in Genesis 6:18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into** the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.”

Well, what does an Ark do any way?

An ark is a vessel that carries or contains something. Jesus Christ as our Ark contains our hope and our salvation.

An ark also carries its contents to a destination, just as Christ carries us through this life and delivers us safely on to Heavens shore and eternal life. –by the way we that are saved have eternal life now, we’re not waiting until we die to receive eternal life, we have eternal life now, from the moment we were saved.

The ark provided safety for Noah and his family, just as Christ provides safety for us. Noah and his family possibly fell down many times inside the Ark, but never did any of them ever fall out, God had shut the door.

Genesis 7:16---and the LORD shut him in.

And let me say “The “Door” is also a picture of Jesus Himself, Jesus said in John 10: 9I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Let me remind us too, that the “flood” was typical of the Tribulation that’s yet to come on the earth just after the rapture of the True Church, Noah and his family are types of Israel that will be brought through the Tribulation, that is “one third ”of them according to;

Zechariah 13:8 8And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

Enoch, was a picture of the “Church” being taken out of the world before the Tribulation, he was removed before the flood. Taken out alive.

Genesis 5:24** And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. God sent the flood in Gen.7:** Not a drop of the watery flood could get in side the Ark, because the Ark had been sealed with “pitch”

Genesis 6:14--and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

And the sealing with “pitch” is a type of the Holy Spirit sealing us.

Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

We’re safe and secure in the Ark of the Lord Jesus Christ; the storms of this life may beat upon our earthly vessels, but will never cause the smallest leak in the Solid Ark of the Lord Jesus.

We’re safe in Jesus.

2 Timothy 2:10-- that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

Another good type of the Lord Jesus in the O.T. was Jacob’s Ladder that he saw in his dream.

Genesis 28:12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. Jesus said that He is the reality to which the ladder pointed. Jacob had saw in a dream the reunion of heaven and earth through the One Mediator, Jesus Christ, which is now brought to reality both for Jacob and for all believers.

Jesus said in John 1:51 And he said to him, Verily verily I say unto you, Hereafter thou shalt see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man-

Another good type of the Lord Jesus in the O.T are Foundation stones and cornerstones;

They are metaphors of The Lord Jesus Christ, both in the Old and New Testaments. Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

It is Jesus Christ upon whom we build our faith for eternal life and perfection, He it is that is the Foundation of the True Church.

1 Corinthians 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:20 -- Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

1 Peter 2:6-7 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, --

ROCK: IS ALSO A TYPE OF THE LORD JESUS IN THE O.T.

Numbers 20:7-11 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 8Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.

9And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him. 10And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

11And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also—

Let me remind us that the Lord God commanded Moses to speak to the Rock, but instead Moses struck the Rock twice, and because of his disobedience Moses was not allowed to enter into the Promised land with the rest of the children of Israel, he was allowed to see into the land, but he could not enter, in stead Moses died in the wilderness and God buried him.

Deuteronomy 34:1-6 And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan, 2And all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea,

3And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar. 4And the LORD said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.

5So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. 6And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

The Rock was a type of Christ and He cannot be struck again, He will never die again.

1 Co 10:4. 4And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

The Brazen Serpent, Was a type of the Lord Jesus Christ:

Numbers 21:4-9 4And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

5And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

6And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned,** for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

8And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. 9And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

Let me say that Satan is called a serpent in Re, 12:9, and the entire human race has a sinful nature because of the fall of man there in Gen.3: as Eve conversed there with the serpent.

Therefore we must confess we’re sinners as Israel did there in NUM.21: and look to the One that died in our place on the cruel Cross of Calvary, as He was lifted up for us.

JESUS SAID IN

Jn. 3:14-15 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

There are many people in the Bible that are good types of the Lord Jesus, but the best is Joseph, a son of Jacob and Rachel. Josephs brothers plotted against him and rejected him, so did the Jews reject Jesus,

Joseph took a gentile bride, so will the Lord Jesus.

Joseph’s brothers at the end bow to him in worship, so will the Jews as Jesus reveals Himself to them. Joseph forgives his brothers, so will Jesus.

Genesis 50:18-20 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants. 19And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

20But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

Joseph had strong emotions, Genesis 50:17-- And Joseph wept when they spake unto him—

John 11: 35 Jesus wept. Shortest verse in the Bible. There’s much that could be said to do with Joseph being a type of the Lord Jesus. ------------ David is another good type, as he was a shepherd and king, Jesus is our Great Shepherd, HE’S the Good Shepherd. Jesus was born King of the Jews, We are the sheep of His pasture, Jesus is the Living Water, He is the Bread of life. And He is soon to return for His own.
