Title: Lord’s Prayer

Theme: Get a better understanding of the way to pray by the Lord’s prayer.

Text: Matthew 6:5-15

Mat 6:5 "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites (actors). For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

“when you pray” – don’t’ pray as the hypocrites – the actors, the show offs

(Mat 6:6) "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

David constantly refers to that “secret place” in Psalms.

Psalms 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." 3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. 4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

(Mat 6:7) "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

“when you pray”,

Vain repetitions -this does not mean repeating this prayer or reading a prayer but to repeat a prayer over and over again to expect to get somewhere with God. It has to come from within the heart.

(Mat 6:8) "Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

(Mat 6:9) "In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

“Our Father in heaven”

Reminds us of our position “come boldly to the throne of grace”

Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. (16) Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

He is our father. We cry “ABBA Father”

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

Hallowed be Your name

Holy is your name. Your name is reverenced. “Do not take the Lord’s name in vain.”

Exodus 20:7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

(Mat 6:10) Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Your kingdom come.

What is God’s kingdom like? Reminds me of God’s agenda. God’s plan and God’s purpose. Many times it is so much different than what we are used to.

Your will be done

God’s will. This makes it more personal. First we are praying for the world and God’s plan but now we are praying the more personal prayer.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

MESSAGE Romans 12:1-2 So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life--your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life--and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. (2) Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

On earth as it is in heaven.

(Mat 6:11) Give us this day our daily bread.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Our basic needs to be met. Why do we have to be afraid? “this day”. Each day one day at a time. Why worry?

(Mat 6:12) And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.

Forgive our debts

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life” Romans 6:23

As we forgive our debtors

We owe something to someone we must release this.

Too many times we act like the servant in

Mat 18:21 Then Peter came to Him and said, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?" 22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. 23 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 "And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 "But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made. (26) "The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, 'Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.' 27 "Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. 28 "But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, 'Pay me what you owe!' 29 "So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.' 30 "And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. 31 "So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done. 32 "Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. 33 'Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?' 34 "And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. 35 "So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses."

Mat 6:14 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 "But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(Mat 6:13) And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

“do not lead us into temptation”. This is a prayer before the temptation.

{a) [And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil] Do not permit us to be overcome by evil but deliver us from the evil one.

Help me to be sensitive to your spirit that when I am tempted I will “avoid all appearances of evil”. It is not worth the risk.

“deliver us from the evil one”. Recognition of the enemy and prayer for God’s protection.

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

NLT 8 Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour.

Remember when facing temptation

1 John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

1Corthians 10:12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

Conclusion

Yours is the kingdom “It is your kingdom”

The power “It is by your power”

“for in Him we live and move and have our being” Acts 17:28

And the glory forever. “Let you receive all the glory” glory-dignity, honor, recognition

Recognizing that He deserves our praise for all things.

1. He is the Source of the kingdom and the power and the glory.

2. He is the Possessor of the kingdom and the power and the glory.

3. He is the Recipient of the kingdom and the power and the glory.
