Man must be aware the scenario that surrounds the founding of his world.

How can we find our place in the world??

PROVISION of God(:29-30)

Explanation:(:29-30)

:29—“And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, & every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.”

God speaks to man directly informing him that ample “food” is supplied for him. God has seen fit to provide man’s sustenance by means of the seed bearing “herb” fruit “tree.”

Again...the provision is indirect—now by the autonomy— given to the creatures themselves at God’s hand.

:30—“Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, & to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; & it was so.”

The earth must have been very different at creation than now, as every creature is also to be sustained by means of the “green herb.” As God states, so it happens. This does not change until after the Flood has dissipated—Gen. 9:3—““Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs.” There is no hint of a carnivorous food chain here!

Isa. gives us an idea of this in describing the future reign of Christ—

Isa. 11:6 -9—““The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf & the young lion & the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them. The cow & the bear shall graze; Their young ones shall lie down together; And the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea.”

Argumentation:

Gen. 22:7-14—“But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father & said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the fire & the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together. Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there & placed the wood in order; & he bound Isaac his son & laid him on the altar, upon the wood. And Abraham stretched out his hand & took the knife to slay his son. But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven & said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.” And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Then Abraham lifted his eyes & looked, & there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went & took the ram, & offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of The LORD it shall be provided.””

Num. 11:21-23, 31-32—“And Moses said, “The people whom I am among are six hundred thousand men on foot; yet You have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat for a whole month.’ “Shall flocks & herds be slaughtered for them, to provide enough for them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to provide enough for them?” And the LORD said to Moses, “Has the LORD’S arm been shortened? Now you shall see whether what I say will happen to you or not.””.....“Now a wind went out from the LORD, & it brought quail from the sea & left them fluttering near the camp, about a day’s journey on this side & about a day’s journey on the other side, all around the camp, & about two cubits above the surface of the ground. And the people stayed up all that day, all night, & all the next day, & gathered the quail (he who gathered least gathered ten homers); & they spread them out for themselves all around the camp.”

God provides us with all we need. Do you disagree?....

Is there trouble in your life? Death, Disease, Loss, Heartaches, Disappointments, Questions unanswered, etc?

Eph. 3:14-21—“For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven & earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted & grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width & length & depth & height-- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever & ever. Amen.”

Yes, our God provides! & By God’s Provision, we know we are loved!

Hab 3:17-19—“Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls-- Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills. To the Chief Musician. With my stringed instruments.”

Rom. 8:28-37—“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; & whom He justified, these He also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, & furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

*Js. 1:17—“Every good gift & every perfect gift is from above, & comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

Jn. 14:12-18—““Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; & greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, & He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever--“the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you & will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”

Thereby the entirety of all that arose in tandem with “the heavens & the earth” at creation was “finished.”

“All”—lk kole— All, the whole—Each, every, anything, Totality, everything.

“Host/Vast Array”—habu tseb-aw-aw'—That which goes forth, army, war, warfare, host. Argumentation:

Mat. 19:16-17—“Now behold, one came & said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God....””

Ps. 145:1-21—“<> I will extol You, my God, O King; And I will bless Your name forever & ever. Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever & ever. Great is the LORD, & greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty acts. I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, And on Your wondrous works. Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, And I will declare Your greatness. They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, And shall sing of Your righteousness. The LORD is gracious & full of compassion, Slow to anger & great in mercy. The LORD is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works. All Your works shall praise You, O LORD, And Your saints shall bless You. They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom, And talk of Your power, To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, And the glorious majesty of His kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And Your dominion endures throughout all generations. The LORD upholds all who fall, And raises up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look expectantly to You, And You give them their food in due season. You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing. The LORD is righteous in all His ways, Gracious in all His works. The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry & save them. The LORD preserves all who love Him, But all the wicked He will destroy. My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD, And all flesh shall bless His holy name Forever & ever.”

CESSATION of God(2:2—2:3)

Explanation:(2:2—2:3)Rest/Reminder

:2—“And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, & He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.”

Every creative act of God had been completed by the close of the 6th day(1:31). However, the following day—the seventh—took on new significance as a result of the previous day’s work. “His Work” is the term used to characterize God’s previous 6-day accomplishments. Creation was God’s Magnum Opus of sorts.

This day was the one in which God “rested” “from all His work which He had done.” God thus ceased(rested from) “all” His creative work. All His work is past tense— “His work which He had done.”

God having created 1)The substrate from which every living thing finds its substance & place & 2)Having infused all living things with life & 3)Having created a creature(man) which was made in His very image. The triune God can rightly cease from creating. Everything is perfect—the earth & all its entourage, including man—& needs no further to satisfy its created purpose.

Ex. 31:15-18—“‘Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. ‘Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. ‘It is a sign between Me & the children of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens & the earth, & on the seventh day He rested & was refreshed.’” And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.”

‘...."In six days the Lord made heaven & earth,... but on the seventh day...it says literally in the Hebrew...He ceased." He stopped. He stopped creating. He stopped making. "And was refreshed," now that's an addition. Now you say, "What does it mean He was refreshed?....The idea of that Hebrew word "refreshed" is the idea of satisfaction or delight. ...not...replenishing of lost energy or strength, not some level of rehabilitation, but the idea of being refreshed or to find delight because of satisfaction.’—John MacArthur

“Ended”—hlk kaw-law'—Verb Piel waw consecutive third masculine singular apocopated—To complete, bring to an end, finish. “Done”—hse aw-saw'—Verb Qal Perfect third masculine singular—To do, fashion, accomplish, make.

“Rested”(See 2:3)—tbv shaw-bath'—V. Qal Waw Consecutive third masculine singular—1) To cease, desist, rest—1a) (Qal)—1a1) To cease,1a2) To rest, desist (from labor); 2) (Qal) To keep or observe the sabbath.

“Work”—hkalm mel-aw-kaw'—Strong— properly, Deputyship, i.e. Ministry; generally, Employment (never servile) or Work (abstractly or concretely); also property (as the result of labor):-- Business, + cattle, + industrious, occupation, (+ -pied), + officer, thing (made), use, (manner of) work([-man], -manship).

:3—“Then God blessed the seventh day & sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created & made.”

“Then God blessed the seventh day & sanctified it,”

In a sense, we are here encouraged to cease & desist our work of ‘creation’ as well—that which is brought about by our effort in flesh...And even by the Spirit of God. To hallow God’s perfection.

There comes a time when we stop what we do for personal satisfaction & income, support, provision—all necessary things— & emphasize God’s creative beauty.

But how does the 7th day relate to the Sabbath Day of the Law?

Ex. 20:8-11—““Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor & do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens & the earth, the sea, & all that is in them, & rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day & hallowed it.”

This commandment for Israel but it is based solidly on the events comprising creation. Therefore it has ramifications for Christians & Christianity.

‘To "keep something holy" in the biblical sense is to dedicate it exclusively for worship. Whereas the other six days of the week are for us & our work, the Sabbath is for God & His worship.’

‘It promotes the worship of God. It restores us, both spiritually & physically, so it is for our benefit.’—Philip Ryken

‘Part of the dignity of our work stems from the fact that God works, accomplishing something “very good” & ends that good work within a week’s time. Since we are made in His image, our work should likewise accomplish good—& we should take pride in that work—, We should physically measure our week by Ceasing from the labor of our work on the 7th Day, & honor the Giver of all good things.

Only God in Christ thru the empowerment of the Holy Spirit is able to bring that about!

‘There is a startling omission here ... The little phrase that says,..."There was evening & there was morning," it's not there’... the reason it doesn't say evening & morning is because that didn't end in 24 hours... In fact, God's delight wouldn't end until when? Sin came.’

‘‘God blessed that day," or "God hallowed the day." In other words, God identified it with some...some unique holy character...’—John MacArthur

We live in the true power of that 7th day every day in Christ!

Heb. 4:3-7—“For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: “So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest,’” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; & again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.” Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, & those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.””

In Deuteronomy 5:15, the Lord reiterates the 4th commandment but adds this detail, “You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, & the Lord your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand & by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day.” A day to remember their redemption from bondage/slavery in Egypt.

For Christians, a day to remember our redemption in Christ, from bondage to sin.

Why do we operate by weeks?:

‘...There is no rational reason, no philosophical reason, no mathematical reason, no scientific reason for weeks. Why in the world do we occupy our lives in weeks? Why seven days? Nobody in their right mind would purposely divide 365 days into sevens, it doesn't work...That's why some months have 30 days, some months have 31 days & February has alternate days, depending on whether it's Leap Year. Why all that?...Why is everything counted in weeks? Weeks don't even fit well into months, do they? Four weeks don't make a month. Five weeks don't make a month. Nobody would purposely do this. No committee would do this. Why in the world do we operate in sevens?’—John MacArthur

Because...

Before we had the solar, lunar or any calendar we had a weekly calendar. This measure of days came to man signifying & honoring the finished work of our Creator!

‘During the French revolution[late 1700s], the ‘goddess of reason’ was introduced to French society. The revolutionists wanted to rid the country of every vestige of Christian influence. So they planned a calendar that would be based on the decimal system. One day in ten, not one day in seven, would be given as a day of rest. But the plan failed. They found that people were unproductive, & the human body was unable to endure the strain. Thus one French social scientist said, “Let us observe Sunday in the name of hygiene if not in the name of religion.”.....

‘The day was a day of rest which was a physical necessity; it was also a day of reflection, which was a spiritual necessity.’—Erwin Lutzer

Col. 2:16-17—“So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.”

We can freely worship on any given day but generally we choose Sunday because the Lord Jesus rose from the grave on a Sunday, a most significant day regarding our NEW creation.

“Blessed”(See 1:22, 28)—Krb baw-rak'—V. Piel waw consecutive third masculine singular—1) To bless, kneel—1c) (Piel) To bless.

“Sanctified/Made...holy”—vdq kaw-dash'—V. Piel waw consecutive third masculine singular—1) To consecrate, sanctify, prepare, dedicate, be hallowed, be holy, be sanctified, be separate—1c) (Piel)—1c1) To set apart as sacred, consecrate, dedicate, 1c2) To observe as holy, keep sacred, 1c3) To honor as sacred, hallow, 1c4) to consecrate.

“Rested”(See 2:2)—tbv shaw-bath'—Verb Qal Waw Consecutive third masculine singular—1) To cease, desist, rest—1a) (Qal)—1a1) To cease,1a2) To rest, desist (from labour); 2) (Qal) To keep or observe the sabbath.

“Work”—hkalm mel-aw-kaw'—1) Occupation, work, business.

“Created”(See 1:1)—arb baw-raw'—1) To create, shape, form. Strong—(absolutely) To create; (qualified) To cut down (a wood), Select, Feed (as formative processes):-- Choose, create (creator), Cut down, dispatch, do, make (fat).

“Made”(See 1:16, 25, 26 &:11-“Yields”)—hse aw-saw'—V. Qal Infinitive Construct.—1)To do, fashion, accomplish, make. Strong—To do or make, in the broadest sense & widest application.

—In the LXX —arcomai—1) To be the first to do (anything), to begin; 2) to be chief, leader, ruler; 3) To begin, make a beginning.

Argumentation:

Col. 3:1-17—“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, & your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, & covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, & have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all & in all. Therefore, as the elect of God, holy & beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, & forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; & be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching & admonishing one another in psalms & hymns & spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Mat. 12:8; Mk. 2:28; Lk. 6:5—Lord of the Sabbath:

Mt 12:1-8—“At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, & began to pluck heads of grain & to eat. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!” But He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he & those who were with him: “how he entered the house of God & ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, & are blameless? Yet I say to you that in this place there is One greater than the temple. But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy & not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.””

Mk. 2:27-28—“And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, & not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.””

Lk. 13:11-16—“And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, & was bent over & could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him & said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” And He laid His hands on her, & immediately she was made straight, & glorified God. But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; & he said to the crowd, “There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come & be healed on them, & not on the Sabbath day.” The Lord then answered him & said, “Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, & lead it away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound--think of it--for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?””

Col. 2:16-17—“So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.”

Jesus fulfills the “Rest”(Sabbath) of God. He is our Rest. He brings absolute peace, with eternal ramifications, to the soul.

In our cities, towns, homes, at work & play places, we remove ourselves from God’s created natural rhythms to our detriment. Where are You in God’s scheme of things? How do you fit into this creation intended for you? What is your place here?

We haven’t met that intention yet but we will address it in the verses that follow. In those verses & thruout the remainder of Scripture, we will find that the focus & special attention of God’s creative work is upon mankind generally & upon you & I individually.

Your place in this world must center around God. It has been designed to do so. If it does not, you will only find temporary centers within which you life will revolve, which will change as you change, age, circumstances, marriage, children, careers, houses , land, cars, etc., ad infinitum...

Never...eternally Settled, eternal Peace, never eternal Comfort, eternal Direction, eternal Discovery....

Your place in this world must be found in God, thru Christ.
