Family Values- Godly Rhythm Deuteronomy 6:6-9

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Verse 7 uses the phrase “teach diligently.” The word ‘teach’ means “to cause to learn.”

This is different from a lecture or a classroom-based education where a teacher’s responsibility ends once the material has been presented.

Moses is introducing a systematic teaching process that persists until the core truth is understood. In other words, he’s hoping for actual learning.

The key verses given to God’s people are found right before these commands are given.

Listen to Deuteronomy 6: 4-5 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

We need to realize that Deuteronomy 6, verse 4, begins by God saying, Hear- this is known in the Hebrew as the ‘Shema,’ it’s the Jewish confession of faith, recited twice daily by the devout.

Also Numbers 15:37-41 is part of the ‘Shema,’ it’s also recited twice daily. Listen to the command by God. 37. Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 38 “Speak to the children of Israel: Tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a blue thread in the tassels of the corners. 39 And you shall have the tassel, that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the LORD and do them, and that you may not follow the harlotry to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined, 40 and that you may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy for your God. 41 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD your God.”

*Remember the woman with the issue of blood for 38 years, she came to Jesus and said to herself, “if only I can touch the boarder of Jesus’ garment, I shall be made whole.” ILL. (Use a prayer shaw to show what this woman wanted to touch.)

These tassels reminded the recipient to trust God’s promises.

So who is ultimately responsible for the stewardship of what is eternally true? Is it Moses or the child, No, the parents are ultimately responsible of what should be learned.

In America we spend billions teaching our kids to learn great skills, but it’s mixed with pagan theories. We swallow this, because it’s just the way things are. (It’s the pattern or rhythm in our society.)

There aren’t easy answers! Realize this, every family has a rhythm. If you were to analyze the rhythm at your house, you would soon discover that much of your family life consists of repeated patterns.

My testimony: Every morning around the kitchen table, prayer, sausage, hot biscuits, eggs, grits, an AM radio station called WKLY every morning at 7am. Morning devotion and prayer.

Listen to what Jesus said in Matthew 22:34-40 But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” 37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Testimony: I am here today because of my parents established good rhythm in our home. (Habits) I remember that rhythm, I find myself teaching my kids that godly rhythm.

Church attendance, tithing, devotions, prayer, praise and worship music, and hymns all these can bring godly rhythm in your family.

*I want us to pray that Godly Rhythm will be established in your home.
