No man is an Island

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR

Sermon at Temple Israel of Hollywood

delivered 26 February 1965

Keep moving from this mountain

And we’ve been in the mountain of indifference too long and ultimately we must be concerned about the least of these; we must be concerned about the poverty-stricken because our destinies are tied together. And somehow in the final analysis, as long as there is poverty in the world, nobody can be totally rich. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. And what affects one directly affects all indirectly. For some strange reason, I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. And you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. John Donne caught it years ago and placed it in graphic terms, “No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” And he goes on toward the end to say, “Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never sin to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.” And when we see this, we will move out of the mountain of indifference concerning poverty.

Luke 10:25-37 (King James Version)

25And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

26He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?

27And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

28And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

29But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

30And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

33But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

36Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

37And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Luke 10:25-37 (King James Version)

25And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? (he asked the right question)

26He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? (God has given us his word and it should goveren our lives, we do not need rappers to give us wisdom we can find it in the word of GOD)

27And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. (He knew what the word said, but he had not taken time to apply it to his own life, a lot of times we know what is right but we do not take the time to apply it)

28And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. ( if we just follow God’s WORd we can live life to the fullest, Matt 6:33 Seek ye first the kingdom of GOD and its righteousness and all these other things will be added unto you)

29But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? (he wanted to know that his understanding was right, he wanted to be sure about his salvation)

30And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. ( the road from Jerusalem was filled with thieves and robbers, misfortunes of life,

Some times we are called on to be a certain man or woman on the Jericho road, The Jericho Road. The Jericho Road. It always happens on the Jericho Road. It is the seventeen miles of violence and oppression. It is the strip of suffering. The Jericho Road? It’s a symbol. It’s a symbol of suffering in the world.

Jericho Road, is the distance between being layed off and your next job,

The distance between a broken marriage and your next relationship

The distance between a broken heart filled with pain and healing so you can live again

The distance between fear of loneliness and abandonment and the faith of trusting in a God who will never leave you!

The distance between wondering where you next meal is coming from and having an abundance of food!

The distance between, walking and riding the bus, and having your own transportation!

The distance between an un sympathetic landlord, and owning your own home..

The distance between the doctors office and a bad report or a bad test, and the faith that God will heal you!

The distance between losing a loved one you care so much about, and having faith to live another day, believing you will see your loved one again!

The distance between a guilty heart filled with sin and bad choices, and know that the blood of Jesus can wash away your sin!

31And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. (how many times have we passed someone by that just needed a helping hand? How many times have we said I mma do me? And walked on the other side of the road?)

32And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. (How many times have we looked on someone in distress, broken hearted, wounded, robbed of the joy of life, half dead, and passed them by? And just said Imma do me?)

33But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, ( now Samaritan was a stranger, yet he had compassion, God loves it when we do for others, when we show the love of GOD to strangers)

34And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. ( the oil represented the anointing and prayer, the wine represented the blood and communion, a lot of times we just need to give a word of prayer, and show compassion and bring folk back into communion after they have been wounded)

35And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. (he gave of his own resources, even when he did not have time, even while he was busy with other stuff, he showed kindness and mercy, and notice he said when I return.. I will take care of whatever it costs…whatever it costs to get someone saved we ought to be willing to paid the price, Jesus paid it all for us!)

36Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

It is plain what we should do, and what we ought to do as Christians, but what will we do? Are we gonna say Imma do me? Or will we have mercy and say, Imma do you?

37And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
