A Song In The Night

Pastor Ken Crow

Psalm 77:5-7 (King James Version)

5I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.

6I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.

7Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?

This morning I will title this message, a song in the night. It is clear from reading Psalm:77 that the author is experiencing a very dark and troubled time in his life.

Psalm 77

1I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.

2In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.

3I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.

4Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

At times in life we may walk through deep valleys . The grip of the cold dark night may seem endless. Remember the man who wrote this Psalm was labeled by God himself as man after his own heart.

Sometimes we seem to expect that we will avoid the low spots in life but the Word is full of Godly people who experienced times of trouble.

But this morning there is encouragement from the Word of God.

1. This night will not last forever.

Psalm 30:5 (King James Version)

5For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

Listen here to the words of Job in the midst of his peril.

Job 29:2-4 (King James Version)

2Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;

3When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;

4As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;

2. You are not alone in the night.

God hears your song.

Psalm 77

1I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.

Even in his plight David knew God had not abandoned him.

Oh that blessed assurance that Jesus sticketh closer than a brother. In Matthew 28:20 Jesus makes you and I a promise.

lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

In the 23rd Psalm maybe David himself said it best.

Psalm 23 (King James Version)

Psalm 23

1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

3. The night has a purpose.

Allow me to share with you two scriptures in Genesis.

Genesis 1:5

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Genesis 1:14-18 (King James Version)

14And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

Nights and valleys make us stronger.

Nights may give us time to reflect and to search our own hearts,

Climbing out of the valley forms strength in us.

4. Start looking for the light.

Even in Psalm 77 the writer is looking for the light in his tunnel of darkness.

Psalm 77:10-20 (King James Version)

10And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.

11I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.

12I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.

13Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?

14Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.

15Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.

16The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled.

17The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad.

18The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook.

19Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known.

20Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

First we will find our light in Jesus.

John 8:12 (King James Version)

12Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

John 1:5 (King James Version)

5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Jesus also tells us we are to be lights to each other.

Matthew 5:14 (King James Version)

14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

God Bless And Amen
