WHEN SIN ENTERED IN-VII—Genesis 3:1-24

Attention:

Little 5 yr. old Johnny told everyone he wanted to be a Medical Doctor.

His parents always encouraged Him that he could be anything he wanted to be.

One day while playing he hurt his eye & ran screaming to his Mommy, “Now I can’t be a Doctor!”

Mom was puzzled as to why he could no longer be a Doctor.

He responded, “Cause now I’ll have to be a pirate!”

Johnny assumed the injury permanently destroyed his dream!

We can assume the same with sin’s separation from God.

Need:

Why are things the way they are? Why does it seem that my life is an uphill battle? Why does God seem so far away? If God loves me, why is life so difficult? Is it possible to reconcile & communicate with this God?

Genesis chapter 3 precisely documented the original appearance of sin.

The original appearance of sin is precisely documented in God’s word.

*What is significant about the entrance of sin?

*How is the entrance of sin to be regarded or how is it significant?

EXPRESSION of HEADSHIP(:20)

Explanation: (:20) Authority

:20—“And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.”

The man now, ruling over his wife(:16), gives a name/title to his wife. Previously he had named(same verb) the animals(Gen. 2:19-20). This is an expression of his God-ordained authority. This is probably also the first hurdle to cross with his wife since the pronouncement of their curses had come into play along with the subsequent interruption of their marriage roles.

The man possesses authority to name his wife. Naming her “Eve,” a fitting title as her role is fulfilled in her foundationally being the bearer & implied raiser of the first children of mankind.

“To me it is perfectly clear how speedy was the fall after the creation of man. He had not before given his wife this her full & proper name. He had described what she was rather than who: it was only when sin had come in, & when others, had there been any, would have called her naturally the parent of death, that Adam (by what seems to be the guidance of God in faith) calls her rather the mother of the living. His soul, I cannot doubt, laid hold of the word that God had pronounced in judging the devil.”—ENT

“I believe Adam saw in faith that a living generation would come out of Eve -- a generation for God.”—ENT

“I do not think he called her Eve merely because she would be the mother of so many human beings. She would be the mother of all living. Every one of us who live Godward can say that Eve is our mother; that is, we are begotten of sovereign mercy.....In chapter 4, we have the line of Seth; God secures a generation -- a people calling on the name of the Lord (chap. 4:26) -- they are the living.”—ENT

Adam, exercising his true God-ordained headship, “calls his wife’s name” according to his desire & by that which represents her calling as a life-giver. He knew by faith, that the destiny of mankind would always encompass life in God’s graces.

“Called”—arq kaw-raw'—1) To call, call out, recite, read, cry out, proclaim. Strong—a primitive root [rather identical with 07122 through the idea of accosting a person met]; To call out to (i.e. properly, Address by name, but used in a wide variety of applications):-- Bewray [self], that are bidden, call (for, forth, self, upon), cry (unto), (be) famous, guest, invite, mention, (give) name, preach, (make) proclaim(-ation), pronounce, publish, read, renowned, say.

“Eve”—hwx khav-vaw'—="Life" or "living."

“Mother”—Ma 'em—Mother; Point of departure or division.

Argumentation:

Gen. 3:24—4:1—“So He drove out the man; & He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, & a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.” “Now Adam knew Eve his wife, & she conceived & bore Cain, & said, “I have acquired a man from the LORD.””

Both Adam & Eve were driven out however Eve is not the point-person as is Adam.

Headship is ordained by God in the Law for His people:

Num. 5:29—“‘This is the law of jealousy, when a wife, while under her husband’s authority, goes astray & defiles herself,”

*Num. 30:3-8—““Or if a woman makes a vow to the LORD, & binds herself by some agreement while in her father’s house in her youth, “& her father hears her vow & the agreement by which she has bound herself, & her father holds his peace, then all her vows shall stand, & every agreement with which she has bound herself shall stand. But if her father overrules her on the day that he hears, then none of her vows nor her agreements by which she has bound herself shall stand; & the LORD will release her, because her father overruled her. If indeed she takes a husband, while bound by her vows or by a rash utterance from her lips by which she bound herself, & her husband hears it, & makes no response to her on the day that he hears, then her vows shall stand, & her agreements by which she bound herself shall stand. But if her husband overrules her on the day that he hears it, he shall make void her vow which she took & what she uttered with her lips, by which she bound herself, & the LORD will release her.”

A husband is to have authority over his wife’s fleshly, emotionally & singularly derived decisions.

Adam is called & accountable regarding the existence of sin even though Eve ate of the tree first!:

Rom. 5:12 -13—“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, & death through sin, & thus death spread to all men, because all sinned-- (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.”

But there is a law given:

John 9:39—“And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, & that those who see may be made blind.””

Men are answerable to God as heads of the home, though their major role/place is as ‘providers’ for the home.

1Tim. 2:11-14—“Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.”

Eph. 5:22-33—READ

Illustration:

Many women in today’s American culture will not take the name of their husband as their own. They may refuse it altogether or hyphenate the name. This is a very blatant/openly prominent expression of the curse upon the woman—her desire to control or head the relationship.

SACRIFICIAL PROVISION(:21)

Explanation: (:21)

:21—“Also for Adam & his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, & clothed them.”

Even with the onset of the curse(s) God Himself “made” clothes for them to cover their nakedness.

God did not condemn them but saw to their need.

*Unfortunately the clothing was made of skin(of innocent animals). This pre-figured the sacrificial system which would place the spiritual burden of sinful mankind temporarily upon animals until the Christ should come by whom we gained the eternal, voluntary, substitutional, one-time sacrifice of a perfect man for imperfect man.

Meanwhile the animals indeed pay the ultimate price for man’s misjudgments made in sin.

*God has made a way to be with Him...But not without sacrifice.

Giving something dear, to provide a need for another.

“Tunics”—tntk keth-o'-neth —1) Tunic, under-garment—1a) A long shirt-like garment usually of linen. Strong—from an unused root meaning to cover [compare 03802]; A shirt:-- coat, garment, robe.

“Skin”—rwe `owr—1) Skin, hide—1a) Skin (of men), 1b) Hide (of animals). Strong—from rwe; Skin (as naked); by implication, Hide, leather:-- Hide, leather, skin.

“Clothed”—vbl law-bash'—1) To dress, wear, clothe, put on clothing, be clothed—1c) (Hiphil) To clothe, array with, dress.

Argumentation:

1Tim. 2:5—“For there is one God & one Mediator between God & men, the Man Christ Jesus,”

Rom. 5:6 -11—“For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.”

1Cor. 15:22—“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.”

Col. 3:3—“For you died, & your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

Sin’s EXPULSION (:22-24)

Explanation: (:21) Debarment

:22—“Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good & evil. And now, lest he put out his hand & take also of the tree of life, & eat, & live forever”--”

Man’s new situation regarding sin now brings God to prevent mankind from eating of the other named tree in the Garden. Man’s newfound knowledge of good & evil has lost him the means of eternal life in sinless perfection. That life could have been his were it not for his sin-driven choices.

If man had also eaten of the Tree of Life as he had the other tree, then his destiny to “live forever” in sinfulness would have been sealed. Praise God he did not & praise God that He did not allow it!

Without Sin’s EXPULSION, we would be doomed to experience the penalty of condemnation forever & could never experience the love of God!

“Take” (See :6)—xql law-kakh'—Verb Qal Perfect third masculine consecutive—1) To take, get, fetch, lay hold of, seize, receive, acquire, buy, bring, marry, take a wife, snatch, take away. Strong—To take (in the widest variety of applications):-- Accept, bring, buy, carry away, drawn, fetch, get, infold, X many, mingle, place, receive(-ing), reserve, seize, send for, take (away, --ing, up), use, win.

“Forever”—Mlwe o-lawm'—1) Long duration, antiquity, futurity, for ever, ever, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, old, ancient, world—1a) Ancient time, long time (of past), 1b) (of future)—1b1) For ever, always, 1b2) continuous existence, perpetual, 1b3) Everlasting, indefinite or unending future, eternity. Strong—properly, Concealed, i.e. the Vanishing point; generally, Time out of mind (past or future), i.e. (practically) Eternity; frequentatively, adverbial (especially with prepositional prefix) Always.

:23—“therefore the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.”

YaHoVeH God thus acting in tough-love(to prevent man’s eating of the Tree of Life) expelled the man from the Garden of Eden, where he then began to “till”(laboriously per :17-19) the very ground from which he had been made.

“Sent him out”—xlv shaw-lakh'—Verb Qal Imperfect third masculine singular—1) To send, send away, let go, stretch out.

“Till”—dbe aw-bad'—Verb Qal Infinitive Construct—1) To work, serve—1a) (Qal)—1a1) To labour, work, do work, 1a2) To work for another, serve another by labor, 1a3) To serve as subjects, 1a4) To serve (God), 1a5) To serve (with Levitical service). Strong—To work (in any sense); by implication, To serve, till, (causatively) Enslave, etc.

*This is the same word translated “Tend” in 2:15, yet his enslavement is to an unwillingly productive land(cursed :17-19) rather than willingly as the land of the Garden had been.

:24—“So He drove out the man; & He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, & a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.”

YaHoVeH God, man’s loving intentional creator thus forces the man out of the Garden designed for him in Eden. The Garden now has no purpose as it cannot house sinful mankind.

God ensured that sinful mankind would never enter the paradise of God. He did this by stationing “cherubim” at the east side of the Garden in Eden. He also stationed “a flaming sword” which “turned” every direction to keep all mankind from “the tree of life.” It seems this guarding instrument was self-sustaining & moving so that any who came near would encounter it.

?Does brx say anything about the bwrk’s role?

“Drove out”—vrg gaw-rash'—1) To drive out, expel, cast out, drive away, divorce, put away, thrust away, trouble, cast up.

“Placed”—Nkv shaw-kan'—Verb Hifil Waw Consecutive third masculine singular apocopated—1) To settle down, abide, dwell, tabernacle, reside—1c) (Hiphil)—1c1) To lay, place, set, establish, settle, fix, 1c2) To cause to dwell or abide.

“Cherubim”—bwrk ker-oob'—1) Cherub, cherubim (pl)—1a) An angelic being—1a1) As guardians of Eden, 1a2) As flanking God's throne, 1a3) As an image form hovering over the Ark of the Covenant, 1a4) As the chariot of Jehovah (fig.)

“Flaming”—jhl lah'-hat—1) Flame (of an angelic sword). Strong—A blaze; also (from the idea of enwrapping) magic (as covert):-- Flaming, enchantment. Used 2X.

“Sword”—brx kheh'-reb—1) Sword, knife—1a) Sword, 1b) Knife, 1c) Tools for cutting stone. Strong—Drought; also a cutting instrument (from its destructive effect), as a Knife, sword, or Other sharp implement:-- Axe, dagger, knife, mattock, sword, tool.

“Turned”—Kph haw-fak'—Verb Hitpael Participle feminine singular absolute—1) To turn, overthrow, overturn—1c) (Hithpael)—1c1) To transform oneself, 1c2) To turn this way & that, turn every way. Strong—To turn about or over; by implication, To change, overturn, return, pervert.

“Guard”—rmv shaw-mar'—Verb Qal Infinitive Construct—1) To keep, guard, observe, give heed.

Argumentation:

2Cor. 6:14-18—“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.” Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.” “I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons & daughters, Says the LORD Almighty.””

Ps. 1:1-6—“Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day & night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.”

Rev. 18:1-4 “After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, & the earth was illuminated with his glory. And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, & has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, & a cage for every unclean & hated bird! For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, & the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.” And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, & lest you receive of her plagues.”

Hab. 1:13—“You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, And cannot look on wickedness. Why do You look on those who deal treacherously, And hold Your tongue when the wicked devours A person more righteous than he?”

1Pet. 1:13-16—“Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, & rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.””

God cannot allow sin in His presence.

Rom. 5:9-11—“Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.”

2Cor. 5:17-21—“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, & has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, & has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

Col. 1:13-23—“He has delivered us from the power of darkness & conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven & that are on earth, visible & invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him & for Him. And He is before all things, & in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, & by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. And you, who once were alienated & enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, & blameless, & above reproach in His sight-- if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded & steadfast, & are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.”
